The biggest problem with copying dvds is that the ones you buy retail from the stores are DVD-9 (over 9 gigs). The blanks you buy to use on your burner are dvd-5(4.7 gigs).
There are different ways you can go about this. Using a program called DVD-FAb you can split the movie onto 2 discs to maintain a perfect copy (you can do this with other programs too). This is however a pain in the ass and obviously expensive since you need to use 2 disc per movie.
So the next option is to shrink the movie to fit into 1 disc. You can do this the lazy way using a program called Pinnacle instant copy (the best quality of this method). Another very popular option is DVDshrink(known for ease of use, but not as good quality). Or if you want to do it the professional, you need to learn how to do CCE encoding which will yield the best quality. More info at www.dvdrhelp
. <--- movies that are circulating around the net illegally use this method and usually 5 passes are more so it could take many many hours to do just 1 movie.
Rule of thumb is if the movie is less than 6 gigs use Pinnacle instant copy, you won't notice much degredation. If it's over 6 gigs you might want to trya nd put it onto 2 discs. You dont' want lord of the rings dvd to look like a vhs copy do you?
