The little things

Thread Starter
I am right in the middle of researching laptops. I have a few real technical questions about the sager 8790’s: What ports do the 8790’s provide (IE 7 in 1 card reader, what else)? I am unclear on how accessories work for the Sagers when ordering from Sage or Torque. Does an ac adapter come standard or do you have to specifically order one? You also have to order a mouse separate? Are there any other accessories that I would need to order to make it completely usable? If you order XP with the system, does it come installed? Do the infrared ports come with every 8790 along with a controller?
I do not have a good feel for how Sager’s tech support and warranty service is. (If you want to give me any links to other post PLEASE do). If I get the “2 year, under 4,000 Warrantech”, from torque what does that mean? What is warrantech and what does the dollar amount matter? Alienware’s support has gotten a lot of bad reviews (but provides a lot), so how does the Sager support and warranty service stack up (try not to be tooo biased ;-) ) I have read a little on the dead pixel policy and am worried because I have see a lot of threads about people with dead pixels. I take it they have a good policy now? Alienware claims to have the best….Any words on that? One last question…My internet has been running into a temporary brick wall and intensive browsing is impossible, so I am looking to just get my q’s answered by people who know. I live in Cali and am not sure where Torque or Sager is located, but I want to skip paying taxes. Is either of them in Cali? Also, I am trying to budget for shipping. Any quotes on shipping from one of them to cali? Thanks for reading the novel. I know most of these answers are scattered in other posts, but I just can’t look for all of those right now. Your advice helps me a lot!- Krezer
*Edit* I couldn't find any dimensions for the 8790's....Anyone have them? Also what is the weight of them w/ or w/out the battery? Thanks

Did you look at the ordering page?
Ports: keyboard and mouse, not sure about serial and parallel but I think so, 3 USB2, 1 Fire Wire, 7:1 card reader, 1 Ether-Net, 1 Phone, Phones out, Line In, Mic In, and I think there's S/PDIV In and Out, TV In and Out, etc. Fast IR (with controller) plus the TV Remote.
Yes, the ac adaptor is included in the basic machine.
Mouse is not included. There is a keyboard built in with a touch pad built in.
Don't need anything to make it usable. But that depends on your use.
XP comes installed.
SAGER service and support is good, but its based on email and voice mail. IE - you call or email them, they call or email back. Its a bit of a pain if you don't have a cell phone or can't be with your computer all day long. But once you connect, its good.
If Warrantech is still using MicroMedia, I wouldn't recommend it.
The price is the price of the machine being insured. If it costs less than the stated amount, that's how much the policy will cost.
Dead Pixels is not a big deal. SAGER has about the best policy around and its really a problem that was blown way out of proportion. I've had 6 SAGERs and not a dead pixel among them.
Don't know anything about AW.
As for Internet, no notebook company is going to help you with that, but you should be able to get great advice here in these forums. If we can't help, there's no solution. After all, there's thousands of us and some even know how to program and everything.
PCT is in Florida. Sager is in California, down in LA (City of Industry actually). If you buy from PCT, you can avoid the sales tax in California as your are buying from Florida. It gets shipped to Florida and then back to you. Same cost. For those costs, look at the web pages, they list the shipping.
Dimensions for the machine are on the websites. Weight too.
Try doing some of your research on your own. Do you know what Google is? Do you know how to search the internet? If you don't, you should probably be questioning why you are buying a major notebook like an 8790.

Like I said "intensive browsing is impossible, so I am looking to just get my q’s answered by people who know." I was not asking for a solution as to why my connection was down, I was basically telling you that I am asking such n00b question as I cannot get into all of those pages to look it up. So I decided to try and get all of the answers from one spot. I am posting from a friends computer and did not really want to sit on here for hours researching stuff. Most of this I am just making sure I know what I will be getting (ports and whatnot) if I order. Even you said you weren't "sure about serial and parallel". It’s those kinds of discrepancies I am trying to clear up. As for the weight, instead of yelling about me not looking for it, could you give me a link? When I was looking for it, I did not easily find it on Sager's website. You may sit there and think "how could someone buy such an expensive laptop when they ask such questions?" Well, I am educating myself and learning every detail before I make my decision. Still, I appreciate your reply. It helps me a lot, Thanks. -Krezer

Highly recommend you actually do the research for an expensive item like this. Look at the review section in this forum and the PC Torque/Sager sites listed below:

They are located in Las Vegas, and being a Los Angeles person, I am going to order from them if another seller I am working with falls through. I almost ordered from Discountlaptops but all this talk about 9800 and PCI-E has made me wait about a month considering I do NOT need the laptop ASAP.

Thanks once again for the replies. My connection is back up so I am back to researching on my own. I occupy a lot of other forums, so I understand how frustrating it is to have someone walk in and ask such basic questions about such a pricey product. I have been doing my own research on this product; I just wanted to make sure I understand it. I also worded a lot of my questions wrong. For instance: the infrared ports confused me because when you changed the type of battery you got, it would come without the controller. This is what made me question if the infrared port still came with the laptop. Also, my question on the dead pixel policy was just affirmation as I had read through the post on the new policy by a Torque representative. Anyway, thanks for the help- Back to looking!
