Acer 2012 Or Mayhem G2!

Thread Starter
After ridiculously over researching my laptop purchase, im down to the final two.

In the red corner, weighing in at at a sleek 6.6lbs we have the amazingly valued Acer Aspire 2012WLMI. This has everything that I want except it only has the 64mb ATI9700, as you all know.

In the blue corner, also weighing in at 6.6lbs, we have the ABS Mayhem G2. Costs a load more than the acer but is much better spec'd.

Acer
1.5 Pentium M (would be praying for a dothan if i ordered)
512mb ram (most likely would need to upgrade to 1Gb)
60gb 4200 HDD (would have to use it for a while to see if its a problem)
64mb ATI 9700 (wont be so sweet to play games on)
Win Xppro
DVD burner
As of this writing, $1319 at newegg missed the 1285!

Mitac
1.7 Pentium M 1.7 (735 w/2Mb cache...quicker than the acer)
1024mb ram
60gb 5400 HDD
128mb ATI 9700
Win xphome
CD/DVD rom
At this spec ABS charge $1899 for this rig

Could I have some suggestions please folks!! Do I save money, or splash out?

Is the 64mb card really going to bother me as much as I think it will? I play alot of cs, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor (hmmm theres a theme here i think!)

I know that the Acer will be fine for all the college work side of things, Im just concerned that the lesse gpu will piss me off after a while. The notebook wont be my primary gaming machine, but i fly back and forth alot from the states to the uk, so being able to frag at 40,000 feet would be uber cool!

You and me both. I've "settled on" the Dell 8600, the Sager 3790, and "now" on the Acer 2012. Give me another week

There are plenty of things the Acer doesn't have, but one big selling point is the entry price. ~1300 is pretty sweet for a widescreen Centrino laptop, 512MB ram, DVD burner, wireless G, XP Pro, and a R9700 card. In all fairness, I would likely spend an extra $400 or so to upgrade the hard drive to a 60G/7200 drive and 1G of ram, but that is something I can do over time (the following month? ). Sounds like the CPU is also upgradable as well, so next Spring a Dothan 2.0 will be very cheap... and should extend the practical lifespan of the box for a couple of years.

There are *always* better specs and packages to be had, and you will drive yourself insane trying to make a decision. I for one am leaning toward getting a "good" box for a "great" price...

See ya at the farm!

I am a 2012WLMi owner, so I'm a little bit biased, however here are my thoughts:

The mitac spec looks pretty good. Ok, the price different is approx. $580 ...

1.5 Ghz P-M vs. 1.7 P-M Dothan
64mb 9700 radeon vs. 128mb 9700 radeon
60gb 4200rpm vs. 60gb 5400rpm
512mb ram vs. 1gb ram

Those are quite significant spec differences, and *maybe* worth the extra money...but note that you do not get a dvd burner or XP Pro with the Mitac, so remove some (minor?) points for that.

The question is: Is it worth the $580 price difference?

Also note that although the RAM, HD, and *maybe* the cpu (not sure if anyone has actually upgraded the cpu yet in a 2012) of the 2012 are upgradeable, the graphics card is note, so you need to consider that as well.

Having said all that, please read the review I did on the 2012WLMi (with 1gb of ram) - link in my sig - and then decide whether you want to take a chance with the Acer and it is possible that it may fit all your needs and save you some money.

I hope some of my waffling has helped.

Hey Odie,
I also purchased the 2025 model until i ran into the 2012 which is 1000 less...Even if i purchase the 2025 i will be looking to upgrade to the HD and memory...so that add more to the base cost of 2300..

So i am thinking of getting the 2012 and upgrading the memory(2x512) and the HD to a 5400rpm, and maybe the CPU if it's worth it..I am engineering and do alot of modeling in matlab and such, so i might need the extra power in the processor..

My question is how hard is it to upgrade the ram? since 1 of the slot will required removal of the keyboard? and i never dealt with laptop before..plenty of upgrades in desktop so i quite familiar the computers..can you provide of instructions on removal of the keyboard? thanks alot!!!...

Hi whitemdx, the ram upgrade is pretty straighforward, as for instructions - if you do a search on this forum, a member posted a thread with pictures of the upgrade.
