Whats YOUR anti-theft plan?

Thread Starter
considering that laptops are the most stolen item in the US..

what is your way of protecting your laptop? or do you just never take it out of the house, and when you are asleep you have it gently tucked away under your pillow

I'm gettin' a laptop soon, and no, I'm not going to wait for the sgaer 8888, I live in the now.

but I want to make sure and have some ways of making sure that I'm the least vulnerable person to have a laptop stolen from them.

I bought a kensington motion sensing lock. It screams if someone (you included) move the laptop or the case after you arm it.

Gives you 5 seconds to punch in the code failing which you'll be the center of attention and the topic of conversation and a very embarassed person for a long time. I know...it happened to me

But I feel good knowing its there. I can leave the bag/laptop on the desk and go get a soda...

But dont forget the code It will take you a good 2 minutes to get the battery compartment opened and reset the lock

It can be fixed onto a bag or to the laptop directly using the key they supply...

Best Solution

Get a dog and tie him up to the table near the laptop.
Make sure he's a mean bastard

Or lick your touchpad and keyboard for all to see and lift a leg and pee on the laptop to claim your territory and personal belongings...

Mind you you might just be able to acquire the entire room as territory...doubt anyone will stay there after that !!

kensington lock is the way to go I think.
I don't like the sound thing. I would get the ones where you lock it at the table so the person would have to take the tabel and your notebook.

you can cut right through a kensington lock with a pair of bolt cutters, couple of my friends found that out the hard way.

gsferrari, That Kensington motion sencing lock, how does it go on the laptop. does it physically have to be mounted onto the laptop or does is just fit in the existing Kensington lock spot?
It goes into the lock socket that you have on the sager laptops. They supply some sort of key which fits in there and then you loop the kensington lock through this key...

Its bloody sensitive...set it up and you have 5 seconds to back off touch the laptop and you have 5 seconds to punch in the code...

failure to do so will raise the alarm and awaken the dead!!

It will deter most peeps because it is motion sensitive...not a cable that they can play around with...

Where were you all a few weeks ago. I was travelling and I had just fininshed work. It was about 8:30 pm. I drove to the hotel, and I was too lazy to carry my stuff up to the room, and I was just going to take off the "work clothes". I was out of my car maybe 4 or 5 minutes, tops. Needless to say, car windows smashed...laptop and case gone. I even parked under a light right in front of the hotel.

Bad part: broken glass everywhere, they wrecked my cargo cover in the back, scratched my car, Confidential client data on laptop (not my data, I was doing a database app for an attorney...lucky it was all behind 2 good passwords), last 3 days work product gone, as well as the days hand written notes, receipts for the last 3 months, all my manuals and text books.

Good Part: I am still smiling. Laptop was a piece of crap anyway, I had left the digital projector, and 4 laptops on site, the 2 in the trunk were still there. Now I have been given a Sager to work on... for the time being. A person caught these "kids" breaking into cars and they pulled a gun on him.

What is the lesson. It can happen anywhere, anytime. I do not drive a real nice car, I keep everything out of eye site at all times, I park under lights and keep all my stuff with me most of the time. I even sit near the window in a restaurant so that I can see my stuff in my car. If you do any business travelling and training and carry a lot of electronics GET GOOD INSURANCE.

A tip for all those college kids: If you are going away to college, make sure that your stuff is covered under your parents house insurance. You may have to get an extra rider to cover a laptop this expensive, but keep the receipt, serial number and take few pictures for good measure.

so the only effective anti theft device is the alarm thing since the wires can be cut?

There's always "Security provided by Smith & Wesson" - if you're so inclined.

yeah get a hybrid dog.. mix the attitude of a small dog and the size and intimidating factor of a large dont.. say a cross between a chiuala and a rottweiler... and make sure he knows who his owner is.. nobody will mess with your laptop then LOL

Haha, sounds like the best security yet to me.

Someone should put one of those stickers on the top of their notebook that says "Beware of Owner" or something like that.

HAHA...just so happens that I work across from the main plant. Job convenience or trouble waiting to happen?

Caveo makes a nice solution its pricey though.

http://www.caveo.com/products/anti-theft.htm

its got encryption, an alarm and it renders the laptop unusable even if you remove the PCMCIA card..
tht pcmia card looks pretty promising for a dorm room setting with the perimeter, however for security in a car or something would make that useless

hmm spyware as an "anti-theft" device.. not sure if i like that idea....and then if somebody decides to wipe the harddrive before they do anything with the stolen laptop, i doubt it'd work.

That motion sensor sounds like the way to go. I'm buying an aluminum case, with locks. Also going to get a "unbreakable" cable so I can latch the case to something. Now that I know about this sensor thing... Another thing to get

Hey... What does it scream? I mean does it just do an electronic scream, or does it scream fire? Or thief?

Anyone know how much a tracking bug is?

First it screams "Getchua filthy paws off moi"
Then it screams "Hey everyone this dude is a faulkin thief"

And then it screams at you "Wherddafuk have you bin off ta mistuh!?"

Its quite loud...and unpleasant...sort of affects your brain and heart straightaway
