Dead 8886

Here's the scoop: bought my Sager 8886 in Feb and life was wonderful. Today, I left it on to download some files and left. My roomate came and said it was whinning a high-pitched noise and then smoke started coming out the back. He unplugged it right away and everything stopped. Now, the battery light does not come on whether Ihave it plugged or not. It does not start. Something rattles when I lift it up an turn it over. I the plastic processor panel where the foot of the case is is warped to heck. The heatsink fins are discoloured blue and red. There is no heatsink gel between heatsink and processor; yea, it even appears as if the heatsink had started to melt. And, of course, I have some important academic data on the hard drive.
Questions: Can I send this back to Sager for a replacement? Will it cost me much? Is it possible to save the data on the (undamaged) hard drive? Has this happened to anyone else?

good luck

You should be able to put the hdd in almost any other pc sans its hdd. It should boot and then the fun starts make sure you boot in safe mode (f8) take care of any likely driver conflicts install only the drivers you think you'll need and burn away.

Here's a thread of someone with the same problem. They've got the solution on it, and don't worry, the hard disk should be OK.

Wow, that link was as if he took pictures of my own laptop! Yes, everything looks exactly the same, the same situation, only mine does not work at all. Thanks for the info guys and I will definitely send this back today or tomorrow. Does anyone know if I need to send EVERYTHING back (software, mp3 player, extra cables and bag) or just the bare computer? If so, what type of box should I use?

Well, first you should call Sager and get an RMA number from them. Also, ship back using the boxes/packing that came with the machine (you did save those, didn't you?); if not, maybe Sager can recommend something.
