ok, thanks for the info. if i ever wanted to upgrade to the mobile amd where would i get it and how much would it cost? would performance be comparable to the "regular" processor? i know battery life would go way up.

so if i was to melt gold and apply it like the as5, that would really work?

i doubt it...

how would the performance of a mobile amd processor compare to the 3200 amd processor?
Honestly, there isn't THAT much of a difference between the 3400 and the p4 3.4. Just like there isnt that much of a difference between the 128MB ATI in the 4750 and the 256MB ATI in the 8790. All in all, I think they cancel out. What did it for me was the assurance of being able to add another hard drive (with raid) in the future.

yah well, i've pretty much decided on the 4750 for now...maybe amd vs pentium wasn't that big of a deal for you, but it is for me. i have a p4 right now, it ain't that great. if can't see a diff between the processors then i'll return the 4750 and get either the 8790 or 5690. to each his own, right?

If your current P4 does not have HT, you would be impressed with the new processors. The 4750 should be a good machine and it's not a bad choice.

Good Luck.

no it doesn't have ht. it's a dell dimension 8200 2.4ghz, 512 ram, nvidia geforce4 4200 64mg. it's about 2 yrs old. usually i wait a bit longer between computer upgrades, but this pos is acting up so much and is so slow that i can barely work with it.

i'm hoping i'll like the 4750. i wanted a mac but decided not to get one after i realized how much i'd have to spend in all (actual laoptop, then hardware like mouse and keyboard, software, etc). also i hate how mac's aren't upgradeable at all aside form ram.

well, that's my life story lol. comments are welcome

It was in fact quite a big deal for me I haven't owned a pentium in hell knows how long. AMDs top CPUs completely destroy the P4s, but we're talking about the 3400 here. The high temps on the 3400 are just not going to do it for me. Trust me, my home CPU is the FX-53 and I have to drop down to the P4 when I'm on the road. And let me tell you, I can hardly notice a difference in everything BUT Doom3. I tried to put myself outside of the AMD bias when choosing what to buy, and don't regret it for one second once I got my machine.

You're right tho, to each his own.

so basically you're saying that i won't notice a big difference between the amd 3200 and the p4 . is this just in permance or what? how do the 2 processors compare in overall in terms of performance, heat, andd battery life. this laptop is going to be a desktop replacement, my dell is going to my younger brother.

thanks, i guess i may still get the 8790 or 5690...

He has a 3.4Ghz NP8790-S as his laptop. The AMD 3200 should be about as fast (feel wise) as the Intel P4 3.2Ghz w/HT.

It really comes down to if you want amd or p4.

DAMN this is a hard decision. is there anything that makes the amd better than the p4? if they're about the same in all aspects then i've just wasted a lot of my time looking at the 4750 since the 8790 has some other nice features that the 4750 doesn't have....

The immediate bonus you have with an AMD64 is that is has the NX bit protection once you install XP service pack 2. You'll be better protected against viruses using the buffer over flow problem to infect your computer.

The AMD64 also runs cooler than the P4 Prescots and Northwoods and they are able to use Power Now Technology to help conserve batt life.

Future earnings that the AMD64 will give you is the 64 bit compatibility which the P4 does not have. I recommend going the the 4750 for your computer.

ok, i think i've more or less decided on the 4750. here are the specs i'd get:

4750-c
3200 amd
512 ram (is 1 gig really worth it??)
80gig 5400rpm hd (i'd like the 7200rpm, but i need the exra space)
4x dvd+r/-r/rw/cd-rw
windows xp professional
everything else stock

i'll be ordering off pcotrque.com.

Here's to no dead pixels.
Yeah 1 gig is really worth it.
I don't think you will be dissappointed. If you have any questions just ask.
