Windows XP SP2 and the NP8790

Has anyone had any issues with service pack 2 on the 8790?
Yes but they are related to certain drivers I have on machine. I am doing a fresh install tonight with a slipstreamed xp sp2 cd. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the info.
Here is a brief on my issue. After installing SP2 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en my 8790 would lock on startup. I was unable to boot into safe mode with a stop on agp440.sys. I then booted to the recovery console and disabled agp440.sys as discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 324764. Then in safe mode I got a stop error on Mup.sys. I disabled that service then got a stop error on NDIS.sys. I disabled that service then got a stop error on NTFS.sys. Knowing it was now a lost cause, I did a full format and reinstall. After the install (before I loaded any third party drivers) I installed SP2. The results were the same. Stop error on agp440.sys. etc. Also note the download of SP2 was not corrupt. I downloaded a fresh copy on a different machine for the 2nd
install thinking that may have been an issue.

I'm now running on a fresh install with SP1 without problems.

Thanks for any insight you may have on my issue.

SP2 is still beta at this time, isn't it?

No it is RTM. I have no problems with XP SP2 on my 8790 other than the modem driver service stopping on boot. But I dont use the modem. I still hate that error in the Event log though.

Gideon, try and make a slipstream disk so XP installs with SP2 already on it. Thats what I did. Google it and you will find out how.

No, it's been released. The full network install is available for download from Microsoft. The Windows Update version will come a little later.

Edit: Took me too long to find that URL again, it seems.

I guess that my point was that it was not "generally available". MS states this:

DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download will be available soon on Windows Update. To receive this download, turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP to receive an optimized download of SP2. Please visit Protect Your PC for more information on receiving Windows XP SP2.

I don't do network installs to the 8790 or the other laptops and desktops within the household.

I download network installs to make slip-streamed OS cds. I generally reinstall the OS on my PCs every 2 months or so.

I avoid a reinstall like the plague - just have too much "crap" on it at any moment of time and it normally takes a good two or three days to get everything restored, updated, and working correctly.

Heh. I have a lot of friends like that. They look at me strangely when I talk about reinstalls. But, I have nothing I don't mind losing, and I rarely completely erase everything. I have storage partitions all over my network. I could probably free up a few hundred gigs if I weeded out all of the redundant files I've copied over through the years.

I hate having PCs act up, so if I see something not acting right, I generally tinker with it a few minutes, and if it's not fixed by then, I use a rocket launcher to kill a fly (reinstall).

I actually can go years without having problems... Except for software conflits.

I've had problems installing it. Failed all the time using the network install or slipstream. It's a Prescott issue. Has anyone with a Prescott been able to install SP2? We need a BIOS update or maybe Microsoft will come up with something.

I started a thread in general about it:

I installed XP SP2 as soon as it was available so that I could run it through the paces before I install it on all my machines at work.

Everything works just as expected, I had none of the issues described in the earlier posts with my NP8790v.

In fact, I like just about everything about SP2, the Security Center, the new tabs and dialogs to handle WiFi as well as a bunch of other little things.

All the new drivers that I use like the new MS Bluetooth drivers work much better than original Billionth ones, the default drivers for just about everything seem to be better than they were before, and I am probably one of the most sceptical and critical Windows Security Administrators at work.

I generally bad-mouth MS for all the stuff that they do wrong, this time they did pretty good IMHO.

SpiderMAX,
I like all the new features in SP2 as well. I have it running on all my comps except the ones with Prescott processors. Just want to know...what processor do you have and what BIOS are you running?

SpiderMAX...look in your System Event Logs

I have a Gallatin (sp?) ExtremeEdition P4 3.4.

Not sure which BIOS though, I'll have to check when I get home.

What about the Event viewer? It's not filled up or anything, and doesn't have excessive errors?

I found a fix. I posted it here:

worked for me.

Seems to be running fairly well so far. Already had Explorer burp once and got ZoneAlarm all fussy, but otherwise everybody seems to be playing well w/ each other.

Just installed on my VAIO FX-120, too, and it seems to be fine, also.
