Yes, that should be fine.

Boot to the CD installation, then delete all the partitions you see there, then recreate one single NTFS partition and format it. Then install XP as normal. The drivers for the hardware are supplied on the first recovery cd (if doing a fresh XP install, just insert the recovery cd once you've got XP up and running, it will show you a local webpage with links to the individual driver installers located on the CD)

I hope that helps

1. NTFS formatting-The Acer 2012 came with 3 partitions not two: Acer,Acerdata and a hidden folder. All three are in the FAT32 format. I kind of liking to have a FAT partition on my computer for uses like BIOS updates of MB, etc...But I also like NTFS for file security and large size capability. So I use the CONVERT command in XP to concert the C: to NTFS. Do a search and read up on it. I am not responsible for any problem you might have.

2.1681 WMLi- We do not have Acer dealers in my area so I did not see this machine or any other Acers. But Newegg showed it's a 15" screen which is not a Widescreen, although their specs read WXGA which is a wide screen spec. 256 MB of memory. You do get Bluetooth and Dothan which are good. There is some substantial price reduction of P-M in October 2004. You decide.

WIFI- is very temperamental sometimes. Based on what I read, your broadband connection is working fine, your router D-Link is OK ( I am not familiar with your router), those are all good stuffs. When you connect your Acer to your router with an Ethernet cable it's working good, so you have two areas left to investigate:
1.- your software setting for your WLAN. Are you certain that your SSID is setting he same for all your computers on the same network? your encryption keys and strenghs. WEP and WPA. WPA will slow down your connection. It would help if you could have another laptop to verify that your software is OK.

2. I have done all the above for my Acer and I am then convinced that my problem is with my Intel Wireless Pro 2200 BG card. So I opened the wifi card to check if everything is setting properly. It was OK and it did make the connection, only real weak and dropped connections every so often. So I assumed that the card was OK but the antenna was either loose or not wired properly. The two small cylindrical contacts on the wifi card are the antennas connectors, marked MAIN and AUXILIARY. So I reset the antennas, nothing. Then I switched the antennas and my WIFI is as good my other laptops and desktops. I have had no dropped connections since then.

This might not work for everybody since there are reports that WIFI is good out of the box. I am surprised that I am the one this happened to. As I said, I spent several days troubleshooting this problem. Of course I also did not get the Dothan.

Good luck to all,

Thanks

I really didn't expect to get reply's this quickly.

I didn't get the Dothan either, just got this one late Thursday.

I have decided since I didn't have any data on the machine to just do a complete system restore from the restore disks and start over.

I had installed blackviper's tweaks, installed spywareblaster, spywareguard, and adaware.

It appeared that the system did not install the intel wireless management software or either I was too dumb to find it originally. Anyway, I had downloaded and installed that also.

So I am going to try it again from scratch and see what happens. Will report back.

r u stuck2:

The restore disks will only reset the system to factory defaults, eg with FAT32 partitions and with all the extra Acer supplied software pre-installed.

A fresh XP install from an oem or retail disk is recommended.

The reason why the Intel Wi-Fi software isn't installed by default is because XP has built-in Wi-Fi management features. The Intel Wi-Fi software is included on the first recovery cd if you want to install it (saves you having to download it)

Good luck with the reinstall.

Hey I just got this laptop and I'm having a touchpad problem... I was using it earlier for about 1-2 hours and then I had to go out, so I shut down. As I came back I found the touchpad not working... It seems as if the application didn't start, and I don't know where it is. I went to Mouse properties in Control Panel and found that it was Synaptics, and I downloaded their current driver and installed and rebooted. It still doens't work. Help!!

Thanks.

USB Mouse works, it's just the touchpad that doens't work.

Same touchpad probs

I got my new 2012WLMi on Aug 5. I had exactly the same Touchpad problems and have read elsewhere in Notebookfoeums that others have too. I bit the bullet and sent it into Acer for repair since nothing I tried would make it work again. I suspect that the connector is loose as it was in mine. I was not comfortable opening the notebook up. Their TS is not customer responsive though and experience long on hold times especially in the evening. The notebook is great.

Sound problems?

I don't know if it's just me but sometimes when I boot, I have no sound. I'd have to like turn it off, flip the notebook upside down and back up right, and then boot again and I have sound. Yeah, weird technique but it does the trick. I don't know what's making it not boot up with sound at times...
