The official Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 Support Thread

I figured that this is the best place to put this thread as I'm sure we'll have at least a few machines crippled by this update...These things are just inevitable.

My update is installing right now...I'll let you know how it goes on the A51m.

Thanks Craig-good idea

I've posted other links to issues concerning amd64 and sp2

Does anyone know if you have to enable the "nx" on amd 64's it's the feature with the added virus protection or if it's automatic with sp2?

thanks

Just finished installing. Everything seems fine.

There has been problems with SP2 on AMD 64-bit machines. The computers keep on restarting on an endless loop. I'm trying to find the support article on the Microsoft site which address this issue in safe mode. Once I find it.. I'll post it.

UPDATE:

Here it is.

when I read that I found it so strange that would happen considering all the hype with SP2 and AMD64 support

sighs

Yeah, me too. I would of never thought that SP2 would cause such a problem with the 64-bit support. Oh well. Isn't the new Windows OS, codenamed "LONGHORN" going to be 64-bit based anyways?
I don't know haven't looked into it yet not sure about longhorn but my ex used to call me that

more than likely when windows 64 comes out in about 1.5 years it will not work with the fx-53, 3500+ etc but will run flawlessly on 32bit cpu's

Just unistalled SP2 and everything is back to normal on my 51m. I won't be doing that again any time soon.

I would wait a few months before you put SP2 on your system so Microsoft can work out the bugs and stuff along with other companies releasing patches and updates that will fix problems with SP2. Heck, wait 6 months perhaps.

They have already done it via RC

Longhorn is the 1st true 64bit OS.

Yea i just installed sp2 and my system seems to run slower now lol......i think im gonna uninstall it...newbiequestion now though, can i just uninstall it by going to add/remove programs and removing it? I dont want to mess anything up by getting rid of it.
I think I read somewhere that you can't uninstall SP2. To get rid of it you'd have to do a fresh install of the original XP. I could be wrong though, maybe someone else has a better take on that.
Start>Control panel>Add remove programs
Highlight "Windows XP serivce pack 2"
Click uninstall.

What it does it it makes a copy of your old fles it replaces sumwhere in the windows folder bassicly.
Yea i just got rid of it...def runs smoother. Back to normal

The reason AMD64 and SP2 have issues is because of Data Execution Prevention (DEP) which was made to harden Windows against some security threats. If DEP thinks a process looks fishy it will stop it from running. When it happens to be a driver or system file then it will cause a crash on startup. Most programs/drivers causing problems will probably be updated to fix the problems soon.

And I don't think Longhorn will be fully 64-bit based. It will probably support 64-bit processors, but will also be compatible with 32-bit processors and apps. Which now that they stripped WinFS from Longhorn, it doesn't seem like that big of a step up from XP, especially when the Avalon and Indigo portions of Longhorn have now been scheduled to be released for XP as updates.

Sp2

Good idea to have all SP2 problems posted in one place.
However can we all be specific with posting the problems, it messed my system up is not telling much.
I was just at MS website looking for SP1 but some how they do not have it to down load they keep sending you to the SP2 download. Since I have a fresh install XP I cannot say if it is better or worse unless it crashes.
I will report any bad experiences on this post.

Have problem with SP2 on AREA-51m 5620D (iP-IV 3.06/512Mb/40Gb/ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 64Mb/Combo/LAN/FM 56k/15" 1600x1200). After installing SP2 and after first reboot I see BSOD with MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. Okay, install clean Win XP with integrated SP2, see the same error. Load BIOS defaults, playing with BIOS options - don't help. Install XP with SP1 - everything works good. Is anyone can help me with this ? BTW, may be someone can send me the last BIOS for this laptop ?

Thank you for help.

I sure can attest to that, I allowed MS to upgrade and install SP2 upgrade and right after it completed and restarted it goes into continuous reboot, I finally had to reformat and reinstall everything from scratch again.
This happens on A51m machine.
