Well I narrowed down my laptop decision to three choices but need your kep now

Compaq r3000z
AMD 64 3700 + 2.4ghz
1gb ram
60gb hd
cdrw/dvd
12 cell battery
gforce 440 64mb video card
price 1300$ after rebates

HP zx5000
intel p4 3.2ghz with ht
1gb ram
60gb hd
128mb ati mobility 9600
cdrw/dvd
12 cell battery
price 1315$ after rebates

Dell i8600
intel m 1.8ghz
60gb hd
ATI mobilityu 9600 pro turbo
cdrw/dvd
784 ram (256 from dell, 512 kingston I addon)
price after rebates 1450$

It has P-M processor and better bettery life.
It also has 7200rpm hard driver.

Another laptop you might want to look at is the Sager 3790 if your in the US.

Else I would suggest the Dell, especially if you are interested in battery life. If this isn't an issue, ie you won't be far from a power supply, maybe go with the HP as it is a little cheaper and probably a little faster machine.

I would also suggest getting a faster HDD. Not much good having a quick lappy if you can't get quick access to your data. Aim for at least 5,600 rpm in my opinion.

Overall though if you can get Dell to throw in a faster HDD, I would go with them.

The Dell 8600. Battery life is a must for a laptop. Other than that they all should be fine. The Pentium M performs close to the other 2. But it's your money. I also considered the other 2 when I was searching for a laptop. But the Pentium M won.

Dude how can you compare, get the Dell with a 7200 drive... Awesome battery life, I can get near 9 hours off my battery with the additional modular battery... Its easy to upgrade, and has the best support of the 3... Well to my experiences that is...
