investing in a pair of good headphones doesn't hurt, or you can look around for some of those USB-powered options (look a few pages back on this forum)..they are pretty nice.

FYI, Nice bass and portable do not go well together.

Aye, you need a sub for good bass. Adding a sub to a system means two things:

1) More wires
2) xportability.

Abf has the right idea. Get some good headphones. (Grado or Seinheiser)

lol you guys always push headphones when people ask for speaker solutions.

Here's the thread http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=35782 on mobile speakers. I don't pretend that they have perfect bass, but some actually do sound pretty good.

If you're mostly going to be in the dorm room, though, get a 2.1 solution, like Creative's SBS350.

Ya! Thats because the moblie type speakers just sound so pitiful =(

I guess im a quasi sound nut though, so im biased.

They simply put 20Hz-20kHz because that it seems ideal. No 5 inch convention cone speaker in the world can produce a flat frequency response across the entire range of human hearing.

For portability the only real solution are headphones. My laptop bag already has paper, pen, mouse, cd case, power cord, usb memory card... etc... its much easier to throw into that mix some headphones than actualy speakers... Plus my headphones sound better than any speaker ive ever listened to...

Oh and im guessing your roomate will appreciate headphones more than speakers as well...

I do have a three set Altec Lansing speaker system i bought for $130 like two years ago that i use for external speakers.

those aren't too bad, and for the price, i don't think you can beat it. altec also has one (designed for the ipod) which sounds even better.
