HP Pavillion Notebook

A friend needs a new Desktop or Laptop for university, at an electronics store we came across the HP Pavillion zd7200EA Notebook with a 128MB GeForce 5700, 512MB DDR RAM at 400MHz (upgradable to 1GB) and a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 with a 1MB L2 cache. The person advising us said it would not be able to run some new releases smoothly... is that true? Doesn't the Alienware Area-51m (a GAMING notebook) use the same GPU? If anyone owns this notebook or has seen it in action please reply with your opinion.

That should be able to handle most games at pretty good settings. The "new releases" he was referring to is one game, Doom 3, and everything like it in the years to come.

He will be able to run Doom 3, just not at the highest settings and definetly not with shadows on.

He decided to buy the PC, based on what you said and reviews he read at CNET and elsewhere. Upgraded the memory to 1024MB, the chip is ordered and will be in the store tomorrow...
