Travelstar 7K60 firmware update?

Thread Starter
I bought my Travelstar 7K60 from newegg and installed it in an I600M. Should I install a firmware update? The Dell update is listed for the 8600 not the 600M but it seems to be the exact same HD.

Description:
"Hitachi TravelStar (A6EA) firmware corrects a clicking noise observed
when entering low power mode on the following models:

HTS726060M9AT00 (60GB - P/N J1489)
HTS726060M9AT00 (60GB - P/N N3574)

Please copy the contents of this Release to your root directory of your bootable media.
An "autoexec.bat" has been added to automate the firmware upgrade.

PLEASE CONNECT A/C POWER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO UPGRADE FIRMWARE!!!"

also should this be done on any laptops other than dell namely toshiba?/

thanks

it applies to all systems that use this drive if im not mistaken

Don't risk flashing it though if you are not suffering from those clicking noises, it would be unecessary as the update adds no other enhancements or functionality. For example, mine doesn't click, so I'm still happily using the original firmware

The Hitachi mobile HD firmware flash is not system specific. Like Bache mentioned, the firmware flash will detect if the drive is one that requires a flash and will upgrade accordingly.

Mmm.. I don't have a floppy drive on my machine. What to do?
use a bootable USB key.

Thanks for reminding me of this, I have the 7K60 in both my i8500 and my i700m, both 7K60's bought from Dell. I'll run the app when I get home.

i'd check the firmware already on the HD...chances are, it is already updated
post #10 of 17
Well, the app is supposed to check the HDD and say whether it needs the update or not.
yeah, it doesn't hurt to try
Well, it programm told me that there is no need for upgrade. Bur performance still sux.

I downloaded this, ran it, and let it format my USB key. BIOS is set to boot from the USB key first, but it won't boot off the USB key. What am I doing wrong?

Before you update it use the diskinfo.exe file (run it in windows) to tell you if you need the firmware:

I've had enough of this... Returned to the store. Boot time was like 40 sec longer with this drive, no worth upgrade for me.

Thanks all for all your help

Thanks! It told me I don't need it on my new 7K60. I'll check the older 7K60 I have in my i8500 later using that app, too.
