Burning Speed

Since I've got my 8600 I always burn DVDs at a maximun rate of 2.4x. The other day I realice that I got a 4x DVD burner, but I have never be able to burn so fast. I've asked DELL and they told me that the speed is variable, because the DISK I use, but I'm using a BESTBUY 1-4x DVD+R.

Any idea?

Its the Media. Some DVDs are just not fully compatible with your burner. Try other brands.

Not to mention software. try Nero a common and widely used CD and DVD burning software www.ahead.de

If your using a burning application, there is somewhere in the program to set-up so all burns with a DVD burn at 4x... I had the same problem with nero, everything i burned on dvd would only burn at 2.4 x but then I changed something in the settings or somewhere and now I can burn at 4x... You just have to look around in the program, and find something similar to what I did...

the burn speed is clearly visible in nero, and is automatically set to the fastest setting, the 'problem', as stated, is that the dvd-r you were using only supported up to 2.4x speeds.

Flockey, it always is not set to the fastest setting... I know this is a fact first hand, because my setting was set for 2.4x and I always used memorex 4x media, then I went and changed it to burn at 4x and now it does every time...

Also the 'problem' isnt that his media only suports "2.4x and dvd-r" burning... Because he said he bought "BESTBUY 1-4x DVD+R" which means the media is capible of burning at the 4x speed which is also supported by his DVD burner...

But as stated by Evo, some media just doesnt work as good as others with certain dvd burners...

My suggestion is make sure in Nero, that you have the setting to burn at 4x... If that doesnt solve it, then go get some better blank media... Note: Cheaper does not mean better, but more expensive in most cases does...

^i also had some 1-4x media, and Nero burned at 2.4. But when i put a different media in, it switched to 4x. I believe Nero IS set to automatically burn at the fastest speed possible, although you can change it to burn slower

Well thats weird, because I have only used my memorex 4x dvd+r's... And it was automatcily set to burn at 2.4 for some reason, but then going and changing a setting or something I could then burn at 4x... Maybe I have a different version of Nero. Possibly that could be why it didnt auto at 4x?? Oh well, larethian I guess you can try using a differnt media type on your next burn, see if that makes it better...

Alcohol 120% is another great burner that gives you access to alot of settings.

Thank U, I use Nero and it says me that my maximun speed is 2,4x. I will try another media.

When switching brands of DVD media, read the label on the package. Some actually say that the media is incompatible (for burning) in 2.4x burners. Other brands may have different messages on the label.

I've got the same Hitachi LG Data Storage Device..
and i also can't burn at 4x
I've tried nero and alcohol with 4x media, but they both report a max burn speed of 2.4x!
Can burn cdr at 16x, cdrw at 10x, dvdrw at 2.4x and dvd+r at 2.4x.
I believe that the firmware is limiting the writer to 2.4x, but there are no firmware updates out there for this writer.
If you check dell's forums you'll see lots of problems with regards to this writer.

Let me know how u get on..

Also check the IDE channel that your burner is using. Make sure that it's not using PIO ONLY mode. Ideally, it should be using ULTRA DMA MODE.
