I tried to read up but no luck...wut exactly is memory testing? what does it do and how does it work? Sorry, I ask too many questions

Click the link in Ananconda's reply. That is one of two that I use to check memory. What does it do? It tests memory . It will boot from CD to a default test and thoroughly test all your memory areas and report any problem areas. You can set it to do a "complete" test, which will take a while. If it checks out ok, you will have to look elsewhere. Perhaps there are issues with the mini-pci controller. FWIW, stuff like this is exactly why I very very rarely purchase anything off eBay unless there is a significant savings to be had.

Yeah I definately learned my lesson...but I thought $1000 USD for an M6807 was a pretty good deal, coz its next almost brand new.

Hey I think it's a great deal. I'd go for something like that (if I had the money. )

Yeah I thought it wasnt a bad deal...
Aite, so I'm running the memory test on my lappy rite now, 13 minutes and counting It finished the 7 tests once already and in the "PASS" column, it says '1'. I think its running the test again. At what number in the pass column should i stop the test?? THanks

It'll keep looping the tests until you stop it (found that out the hard way after looking at it every so often over a two hour period of time once)

hmmm, memory test looped and finished thrice with no errors....any ideas on what else might be cursed on this machine thats making the broadcom malfunction?
By default the memory test does not run a complete test. I don't remember the key to push to set it for complete and am at work right now so I can't check. It is relatively straight forward though if you look at the options in it. As far as what else could be wrong, BIOS corruption or the mini-PCI controller itself (built into board) are all that's left.

Hey do u guys think it might be a software issue? Should I bother reformatting my lappy? maybe try installing Win Home?

have you made sure your wireless network is broadcasting a name for your laptop to see. also, make sure if you are using encrption its wep. as i believe thats the only level the broadcom supports.

I guess its broadcasting properly...coz i have a USB Linksys 802.11b (2.4 GHz) wireless adapter too, and that works just fine. Even if its was the wrong encryption, the card should at least detect a network. What bothers me is that the internal memory test passed with my card on another notebook. That leads to my next question: is the 'internal memory' actually ON the card itself or theres just some memory on the PCI slot that any card plugged in there at the time uses? Thanks

The Broadcom supports WPA also. Windows XP doesn't support WPA though unless youhave downloaded the update for it individually, have the rollup update installed, or have SP2 installed. Also, if he wasn't broadcasting SSID, a USB adapter wouldn't work.

I doubt it, but you could always try. If you have an XP Home OEM CD, you can always use the PID provided on the COA on the bottom of your machine. For kicks and giggles, post the status of all the settings in the "advanced" tab of you card in the device manager.

Hey,
Does anyone know if the PCMCIA slot and the miniPCI slot run on the same BUS line in an M6807? Coz that would explain why my PCMCIA wireless card didnt detect my network, and neither did my miniPCI card, althought my USB wireless adapter did.
-Jerry

P.S. if the router (a Linksys 802.11B) operates at 2.4 Ghz but my PCMCIA card (a Netgear 802.11A) operated at 5Ghz, is it normal for the card to not detect the network?
A devices can't talk to B/G devices. You'd need a device that operates on both frequencies(2.4,5) to be able to do that.

K, so u all know that my M6807 is jinx'd coz I've tried everything suggested to me and the mini-PCI wireless card still doesn't work on MY laptop. Theres just one thing left to do. Some1 suggested that either the BIOS might be corrupted or the PCI controller itself is malfunctioning. Any ideas on how I go about checking if thats the problem (and maybe fixing it?) Thanks, much appreciated.

problem solutions getting outa hand here

First if there is a manufacturer warranty, call emachines.

Need to know what your bios is. given a like but not right bios flash can be problem (know from experience = wrong arima bios)

third it is only 20 bucks to get replacement cd's for restoring to origanal state to better test it and get something you need anyways

if all else fails here is a couple options to look at:
1 tested card with original oem supplied in lap?
yes-right drivers for system chips cause good communication with pmcia cards and mini pci's
no-you have to restore it first cause many manufactures change system hardware for their needs (origanally Arima badged by emachines and voodoo....)

2 check connections(reseat the card and look for damages on anything) obviously there has been some problem with previous owner

3 get a G based card to replace... broadcom is g card and backwards compatible with B networks. "a" based networks are only compatible with "a" cards/connections and not backwards compatible.

Finally if you are comfortable look inside the back of the laptop(removing the entire backing safetly.

SUCCESS!!

I recently updated my BIOS, installed SP2, installed latest chipset drivers and installed latest AMD64 drivers....and the broadcom finally f**kin works!!!!!!!! Except for the cracked hinges, i have no complaints with my m6807 whatsoever! Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread...apparently this is one of the top viewed threads and also has one of the highest number of replies Shout outs to ThunderPC and Anaconda

P.S. Even thought the card works FINE, the memory test still fails :P. So middle-finger to that

Hey dude,

Um, i'm not sure which wireless card u have in ur laptop. but if it is the same as mine (Broadcom 54G), then go to this website: http://www.arima.com.tw/ViewSupport.asp?View=71
The wireless driver on that page is better than any driver u'll find on the broadcom. i now actually think that, that is what got my card working.

If its not the same card as mine try installing those drivers anyways. If it still doesnt work, either Thunder or Fizi might know the answer, or u should try posting in the Dell section for more luck

Hope this helps!
