Check this out! I just bought this for my future laptop. It is a label that sticks to the computer with a tracking #. If stolen people will know its stolen merchandise and stoptheft recovers 9 out of 10 stolen notebooks. cost me $37.

huh so your saying if some one stole it stoptheft police would come and rape the people who stole it?

It's mostly a theft deterrent. A thief sees the sticker and is less likely to steal it.

yeah, and the sticker as a label with a # to call if found and it is identified by the # on the sticker or the serial # of the computer. If the theif pulls the sticker off, there is a tattoo under it (tattoos r permanant) and it says "Stolen Merchandise" with a # to call. This would help prevent a theif from selling it.

However, at this point when the thief, who has already stolen the notebook, realises he can't sell it, he will destroy it. In which case, you will still be out your notebook. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I'm just saying it may not be as effective as it sounds. It depends on the thief being educated to the system. If your laptop is in a case or backpack. The thief is not going to open it up first and check and see theirs a special sticker. He's going to snatch the case, and then if and when he realises there's this sticker he's going to chuck it in the trash. Many people will take it even if they do see the sticker, assuming they can just remove it, which in fact they can and then they can scratch out the "stolen" marking underneath it.

It also means you might not ever be able to sell your laptop.

Not that you'd ever sell your Sager anyway. Right?

Can't they scratch it out? Or maybe put another sticker on top of it, and then sell it?

PART-it out, if theyre smart enough....

The only thing i could think of that would be the best security system (thats realistic) would be something similar to an onstar system. Maybe a lojack system, but i would think that you would have to be willing to pay a monthly fee for something like that....

Kensington has something like a Lojack System. Well it's not exactly like LoJack. I think it uses an Ip address locator or something like that, so the laptop would have to be connected to the web. there is not actually alot of info about it on thier website at :

Anyone else know of similar products ?

is that software? or hardware?
it would be easy to just Wipe hdd(s) clean and just install OS...
not to mention if you XP key is at stickered to the bottom of your notebook.

I just found out today that somebody ripped off a PC-tower from my work....
HP Celeron 900 Mhz
128 MB PC133 ram
30 or 20 GB HDD
kinda makes me scared to take my lappy to work now, when it gets back from Repair-shop.... I always lock it up with a belkin notebook lock - Key, but i dont know if i would want to sneek up behind them while theyre attempting to take my lappy. That way I could do a sneek attack, lets say a Metal Rod to the back of the skull or to his ribs. But then Id be afraid of him dropping it, but if they were to drop it couln't I sue them to damages? Private property locked up in a public place with video recording cameras too.... Probably wouldn't have any money anyway, most people who thief pawn thier haul for cash.....

Dammit.... To think back in the day they never used to lock their doors at night, because they never had to worrie about this sort of stuff......

best way to go is to hire a big black guy who has the name babba.

strap the laptop to him and i bet no one will even look at it.

The Stop Theft sticker that j4ever is talking about is transferable.. so if you do sale your laptop it's new owner will get the same protection. Also there is a software called Xtool. It's a Stealth tracking software that will send the laptops/computers current location each time it is connected to a phone, network or internet without detection. It has a worldwide detection locator once registerd, the yearly subscribtion is about $47.00.
