Acer Travelmate 8006 LMi ???

Thread Starter
i did quite a lot of research and i am quite decided to go for the acer travelmate 8006 LMi. IBM and HP offer more quality i think - but the price premium is just too high. i get the acer fo about 20% less with more power inside. due to the fact that i will also do a litte gaming with this notebook.... i will need the power!?

but there are some issues i am still a little bit worried:
* RAM: is only 333 and 2x256. as i will maybe upgrade later i would prefer 1x512 (400). is it possible to order it like that, or do i have to throw the 256s away...?
* HDD: i think it has only 4200rpm...? i heard i should not buy anything with less than 5400rpm...? correct? is there any possibility to get a faster HDD? maybe 60GB. i won't need 80GB...!
* heat won't be a big problem i think. i have a IBM T30 company laptop, which is said to get quite hot, but i can handle that.
* noise won't be a big issue either
* viewing angle.... i am sitting in front of it..(LOL).. so i guess this won't be a big deal either...
* keyboard: i love the IBM keyboard. i will miss it!!! but IBM with the same speed is just to expensive!
* design: i think HP and IBM just look better. but again -> the price.

any answers to my questions???
any comments on my opinion..????

thx a lot in advance,
Don

Intel 855PM Chipset supports only PC-2700, so the max memory speed you get is 333 MHz. You have to throw 256 MB memory modules away. Acer laptops are not configurable.

That's right. There is no way to get a 5400/7200 rpm drive, except buy a new one and replace the old one.

The left palm area may heat up considerably, depending on the heat emission of the hard disk.

In Acer, the home and end keys will be under the fn key.

Cheers!

1. You may end up being able to order 1x512 - really depends on the reseller. But TM8006LMi only supports DRR333, not 400 - I suppose it'll be working fine, it's just waste of money resulting the same perfomance, if not even worse... I'd rather get DDR333, but low latency 2,5-3-3-6 (or something like that, I might be wrong here), which I've read of a few of threads back here...
2. As for HDD, yes it is only 4200 rpm and, again, you may change it either by yourself or order it with other 5400 rpm or even 7200 pm HDD if that's an option your reseller can offer...
3. well, it gets hot when gaming, but not as hot as the sun, so one can actually survive it... )))
4. it's not noisy at all...
5. viewing angle is an issue, but for me it's not too bad as it was described here in different threads... It's not that hard to find a sweet spot at all...
6. keyboard I believe is fine, tough I've never had a long time experience with IBM keboard...
7. I would argue on this, but I won't )))) Design is ok.
