hi all,

where can i get catylst drivers for my 5680 with a radeon 9600 Pro? ATI refers you to sager, which doesn't have much of a high priority it seems on keeping drivers current.

You can wait for the Omega drivers, which generally arrive a week or so after the current ATI release, or get the ATI Cats from ATI and use something like mobility modder

Are there any independant reviews of these Omega drivers ? What am I installing on my laptop ?

I am running the latest drivers from Clevo at the moment and I get hangs in Doom III (when loading levels, typically). The latest drivers from Sager give me different crashes (generally, bombs out to windows).

how is sager about updating drivers? i hate this about laptops... needing the manufacturer of the machine to provide drivers is bulls***.

Has anyone actually tried the latest drivers for the 5690 on a 5680? If ATI releases unified drivers for thier chipsets then I would think that the drivers for the 9700 mobility would work fine on the 9600. Anyone try this? I'd be much happier using an official driver especally with the DVD playback problems that I hear reported with the Omega's.

There are independent reviews/comparisons, not to mention thousands of users who will vouch for the various drivers. Try google -- "Omega review"

Typically, these are modified drivers based on the ATIs, not built from scratch drivers.

Unfortunately, laptop makers (Sager included), don't have driver updates high on the priority list.

In addition to Omega Drivers, there are also the DNA drivers and I've seen at least a few others.

As for the Doom3 issue, that's not surprising since ATI cards don't perform as well in opengl (which Doom uses), though the newest Cats provide a significant boost.

stuff like this makes me want to keep my gaming on my dekstop. omega drivers are sweet, i'm using them now... but playing avi files was dreadful using the latest omegas... i had to fall back a few revs. i get better playback remoting into another machine!

stuff like this is why i stay with official drivers... my laptop is more than just a game machine. work first, play 2nd. matter of fact... that's why i bought a sager... i wanted a do it all machine.

this is very frustrating to say the least.

Will the Omega drivers give better performance than simply the ATI drivers from sagernotebook.com? Or is it not really a performance issue?

People, the omegas ARE ATI DRIVERS just tweaked a bit. I think the ATI drivers are borkedall the way back to Cat. 4.5. If you want "official" drivers you are stuck with Sager's drivers. You can mod the Cats to run on a mobile chip but ATI does not provide drivers for laptops. gerryf already posted this info.

Ahh, drivers. I've been running Omega drivers on my 5670 for close to a year, with absolutely no problems. I believe (?) that ATI actually gave a nod to the Omega drivers, saying that they were good for the gaming community.

Woohoo! First post by me in months...

OK - I've been investigating this a bit. The best site to go to is www.driverheaven.net for more information.

As it stands at the time of this post, 5680 owners have the following options if you want a later driver:

1.You can download the ATI catalyst drivers. They won't install, but then you can run the mobility modder tool to patch them to run on a 5680.

2. You can download the Omega drivers, which are already patched for mobile chips.

3.You can download another modified driver, but I am not sure which ones have mobile support.

As of today, I found that the Catalyst 4.7 drivers work OK, but I get Doom III problems still. The 4.8 drivers and the 4.9 drivers work even better in Doom III (fast and no problems), but DVD playback does not work.

The Omega drivers are supposedly faster than the unmodified ATI drivers, but the 4.7 based Omega driver does not work with DVD playback either.

Make sure you have a system checkpoint before installing drivers, and restore if your system breaks.

I have been using the previous version of the Omega Drivers 2.5.44 based on the Catalyst 4.5 drivers for almost a year and I have found them to be the most stable of all the Omega drivers.
