How important is ram in playing games

I ordered my a51m and its currently stage 4. I ordered it with 1gb of ram, 3.4 ghz processor and ati 9700 video card. I was wondering how much of a boost I would get out of upping the ram to 2gb. It is an expensive upgrade, so before I do it, I wanted to get some opinions. Should I go up to 2gb or should I just wait and upgrade when the 9800 ati card comes out. Upgrading the video card would probably be cheaper than upgrading the ram, but if I would get a big boost in game performance it might be worth it. I will also be running visual studio.net on it alot if that helps.

1GB will pull you off greatly, but if you need an upgrade, do it your self for cheaper.

RAM is always important with everything. Upgrading for yourself would be much cheaper of course, like Donnie says.

I run gig and I do all right for games and animation apps. Still another GIG would be nice. At least get he gig in a single stick to leave a slot for later.

I think some of the 51m's were having trouble supporting 2GB. I would stick with 1GB of high quality ram.

A gig for now is more than enough. That said, the wonders of AGP let your motherboard steal memory ram to use it as videoram. For example, on my old computer, I ran Vice City with a 16MB videocard because I had 512MB RAM. It required I think a 32MB videocard just to boot, but I was able to get it on really high resolutions.

So in conclusion, more is always better.
