Linux on NP2720?

Thread Starter
Well, I recently (last week) got my brand new Sager NP2720. I had never heard of Sager until a month or two ago, and I just discovered this forum today -- looks great!

I browsed through the Linux forum here, and I searched for "2720" on this site, and I didn't find anything at all about running Linux on a Sager NP2720 (except for Vik's post about the sound chip - Thanks!).

I realize many of you don't like the integrated Sis chip on the 2720, but I am not a gamer that needs that kind of performance. However, I do want to run Linux on it, and I seem to be having some trouble finding a distro that works well.

I've tried Knoppix (from CD), Mandrake 8.2, RedHat 8 and 9, Debian 2.2, and AltLinux Junior 2.0. A couple of these seem to support my video chip (Knoppix and AltLinux), but I'd like a reliable distro to support both video and sound (at least).

Vik says he got his sound working under RedHat 8.0, but what about video?
(My machine stops responding when I try to install RedHat 8.0 or 9.0 -- GRRRR!!!!! I've checked the CDs, and they're fine.)

Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 2720 as well. I currently have Vectorlinux dual booted with W2K on the system. Video is fine, 1028 works great. Sound configed fine but ran fast then I lost it all together. Also of note is the modem. Haven't been able to get that running as well. Not that I've tried really hard but expect issues with both of them. If I had the time I would probably drop ALSA on to it to get the sound running and do some research on the modem. I just don't have the time right now.

I know that doesn't help solve the problem but at least you're not alone.

Most of the time, the only thing that plays a role in wether a Linux system supports a certain piece of hardware is the kernel. First of all, going with the 2.6.x series is probably a must as you are using 'exotic' hardware. Meanwhile, all you would probably have to do to get your stuff working is recompile the kernel with the proper components included (eg support for your chipset, etc). After that, the most you could need is some additional software such as video drivers.

Unfortunately, I cant recommend any out-of-the-box distro as I built my Gentoo system from scratch. Either way, take a distro that seems the best and stick to it for a while - browse forums, google, etc. If you give up, pick another one

Best of luck.
