ram for 3790

Thread Starter
I am thinking about buying my 3790 with out any ram upgrades from PCtorque, but buying it from newegg.com. Is that what most of you guys are doing?
I have a question. What kind of specs does the ram need to fit in the laptop? like any specific pins like having 184 pins and what not.

Whats the difference between DDR333 (pc2700) and DDR400 (pc3200)
Who is the best manufacture? Kingston?

to me it's not worth the hussle... $120 for an additional stick of 512 is good enough for me

i think it's 200pin? no?

the dimms from the desktop doesn't fit in the 3790 or 8790?
uhh no man. notebooks take a different type of form factor --> called sodimm

8790 take sodimm with 72 or 144 pins?

I don't have a 8790 but I am yet to hear about a lappy using anything else other than SoDIMM 200-pins RAM modules.

theres one where you get get the 400mhz for 1$ more.. is it worth the buck? lol does it make any diff?

Not just anything, probably 2.5 CAS latency and unbuffered, non-ecc. PROBABLY. I'd do a price comparison, though. PCTorque does not generally seem to mark up memory upgrades like a lot of other companies do. It wouldn't be worth $20 to run the risk of getting incompatible memory which is very common with notebooks. Every time you touch ram, you run the risk of ruining it with static electricity, too. Not that that's ever happened to me. I have always done what you're planning to do, except with PCTorque, because it hasn't been worth it.

As far as I know, Corsair is the only major RAM manufacturer who has come out with latencies < 2.5 - their xms performance series with 2.0 CL.
If you are into cas 2.0 RAM, look for Corsair.
their website is:
www.corsairmemory.com
newegg also carries corsair but I am not sure if they have the XMS laptop 200-pin modules.
Yeah, the RAM you need is PC2700(333Mghz) 200-pin SoDIMM, non-ECC, unbuffered, usually comes in 2.5CL but you can get 2.0 if you go with Corsair.

Be very carefule about obtaining additional memory for Sager Laptops. If they are no spec'd exactly right, they simply don't work. CAS ratings are very crucial. Totally agree with sonicwind regarding buying directly from PC Torque (Better at time of purchase) than chancing buying memory that doesn't work.

Your laptop will only run the RAM at 333MHz. The resale value of 400MHz vs. 333MHz is definitely worth it, though. However, I've heard stories that you need a very specific type of RAM to work with most Sager notebooks, so you may want to play it safe with a type of RAM that is known to work.

PcTorque uses Apacer ram modules for its other machines. My guess is they will use Apacer for the 3790, as well. But, yeah, best is to call them and ask. Often Botique shops run tests with many dif brands of RAM and choose the one that gives best perform/value - of course some of them would like to give you cheap ram for more bucks but some offer performance ram at very decent prices (hope PcTorque is one of the latter).
I personally find it hard to believe that Sager would have problems with brand names such as Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, Mushkin. As long as the Ram is pc2700 it should work but one never knows enough, I guess.

400 mhz SHOULD be backwards compatible to 333. But...
yes, they are compatible but it's bad idea to pay for 400mhz dimms and use it as 333mhz.
What if the 400 Mhz sodimms have a lower latency (say 400 Mhz CAS 2.0 downclocked to 333 versus pc2700 with CAS 2.5)?

Do you think there would be much of a gain, or enough to warrant the extra money?

Just wondering, as I have no prior experience with trying to downclock performance ram (I'm thinking the Corsair XMS series).

pc3200

i have a stick of pc3200 512M that i got from sager and it won't work with the 3790. tried a number of different configs and the system refuses to boot with it. i'm hoping that a bios upgrade may fix this problem but i'm not holding much hope....
