Finally got the MR9800 XPS! - Page 2

Can't wait for my laptop. Nice numbers
I got 6576, 6553, 6552 on three consectutive runs with my new XPS. Fresh install with drivers from Dell's site. Sounds like mine is running where everyone else's is.

3.4 Processor, 512 meg ram & 9800.

Hey guys, when your running your performance test, which do you use? And plus you have to have the registered version right?
Played Doom 3 on it yet Nomad?
No, I do not have the registered version. Quite honestly, these benchmarks do nothing more for me then let me know my system is running where everyone else's is running. (so I know nothing is wrong) I was posting my numbers so people can use them as a comparison. I'm not into tweaking and modding. Take them for what they are worth! I did install 1 gig Corsair XMS low latency RAM in the unit. My scores jumped a little. 6603, 6596, 6598 for reference.

No Doom 3 yet. My wife and kids only let me have so much time with the computer each night. I gotta sleep sometime!

Compared to my Gateway 675XL (3.0 1 gig ram 128 meg 9600), this thing kicks it's butt! About 2.5X faster. Very happy so far.

hey, are you in Canada or the USA? I ordered mine on July 28th too. And it also shipped on Aug 12th! Crap thing is when i check the dell.ca site, they're saying the eta is aug 23-27. FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK
Im in Alberta Canada. I saw that my XPS got to Calgary yesterday at 17:47 and this morning left Vermillion for Delivery at 06:06...

Which means the wife should be getting a knock on the door sometime this morning or early afternoon....hehe...

I'm at work at the moment so I'll be countin down the seconds till I can get home to start the EXORCISM!!!!

I must admit...Purolator did pretty good...4 business days from ship to delivery...I'm VERY impressed

And just FYI, Dell site had estimated delivery Aug 20-24 after they posted "shipped". I'm assuming they overestimate on purpose...

I'm in the US, Florida to be exact...there is a Dell shipping hub for New equipment that is out of orlando. Which is different then where they ship exchanges.

Hey Nomad, how hot and loud does the XPS get? Have you run any temperature checks? I have a Sager 8790 and it is too f'in hot and am returning it. Thanks.

To be honest, it does get WARM, but not hot, it is definately not for putting on your lap or having on your matress in bed....the exhausts are 3 on the bottom and almost the entire rear is one giant vent. I dont hear any noise other than the servos moving in the DVD burner when in use. I love this thing!

You're kidding? It is that quiet? Even with the EE processor - damn. Wow - my Sager constantly whines (3.4 Northwood) when the memory fan ramps up and down - sounds like a mini-siren. So you can easily use the keyboard on the laptop without saying to yourself - damn this is getting hot? I am 99% sure I am going to order an XPS today and any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks.

Additional Info on benchmarking......

I completely resinstalled Windows XP, Installed Omega 2.5.8 Drivers and ran the tests again....I thought it would be faster.....was I wrong....not one score was over 6000....dell's drivers were consistantly in the upper 6500's

Is there something I'm missing with them?

Thats about right. Dell's drivers are a unified driver written by ATI. Omega just takes the ATI code and edits it. I wouldn't expect any performance increase from hacked drivers.

Omega's drivers aren't for benchmarking. They offer better image quality through the tweaks he does, at a slight cost to performance. Definitely stay away from them if the only games you play are benchmarks.

When the fans do spin up, i barely notice after a minute or so, and i hate them noisy lappies!
Clarification:

My last post was incomplete. I forgot to install the motherboard chipset drivers before running the test. Once I did that, the scores jumped back up the 6550 range.

None the question becomes do I use the Omega's or Dell's stock drivers? Decisions, decisions.
Omega's, definitely. Dell's aren't updated frequently and can studder on many games, regardless of power.

You should expect to have your lappie in your hands in 11business days....just keep your cool when it is in preproduction for 4 days...then boxing for another 4 days....the actualy production time is quite fast (1-2) days.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll love it!
