8887 Black screen. Inverter?

I know this question has been asked several times, but has not been answered to any degree of satisfaction. My screen went black overnight. The picture on the screen is very faint. That is to say that unless I shine a very bright light on it, you can't see it. Gameboy syndrome. Anyhow an external monitor works fine and there doesn't seem to be anything else wrong with the machine.

So with that, can anyone tell me whether this sounds like and inverter, cable etc?? I'm out of warranty and am looking at doing this out of pocket so if anyone knows where I could get an inverter...

Or maybe its just a backlight??

THANKS!!!

Maybe it should be: If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Pistoff, I am having the exact same discrepancy with my 8887. "The picture on the screen is very faint. That is to say that unless I shine a very bright light on it, you can't see it. Gameboy syndrome. Anyhow an external monitor works fine and there doesn't seem to be anything else wrong with the machine."

What was your fix? Self repair, or Sagers?

Help. I need to get this working fast, my naval duties require constant travel and I have online college assignments due.
Thanks!

Fix fo yo prob

Hey bud, here is the fix. Monitor inverter. I got one from sager parts for about 40 bucks. Its an easy install. Takes all of about 10 minutes. Take the frame off of your monitor and there will be a smalll circuit board on the bottom. Gently unplug it, remove the screw and replace. Simple. Lemme know if you need any further assistance. I can provide you with some pics and a walkthrough if necessary. Frusterating problem, but an easy fix. Take care.

wow. my 8887 just did this right in front of me. was just sitting there and all the sudden my brightness started fluctiating and flickering. seconds later darkness. i am NOT happy considering i have no warranty anymore.

where did you get this $40 part? i've already spent $175 on out of warranty RMA and i DONT want to do it again if i can replace the part myself.

let me know. thanks !!

EDIT: i ALWAYS had my screen on the lowest brightness it would go also. disappointing, very.

I got the part directly from Sager parts 1-800-669-1624. It is called a monitor power inverter. The hardest thing about replacing the part is getting the monitor bezel off without breaking it. You will need a steak knife to gently pry the snaplocks apart. Just make sure you get all of the screws out and gently work your way around. If it doesnt unstap easlily don't force it. It WILL break. The bottom of the bezel is a little tricky. You will need close the laptop lid and unsnap it at the bottom. Do not force it.

The inverter is a small circuit board at the bottom of the monitor. It will be obvious when you remove the bezel. I think there is one screw in there that holds it in. Be careful with the cable too. Everything inside is very delicate. When you order the inverter you might want to think about ordering the cable as well bacause a bad cable can cause the same problem. If it works with the new inverter, return the cable and eat the shipping. It will be much less frusterating that way.

Let me know how it all works out for you!

i have had my entire laptop apart already. i know exactly what your talking about and where the little board is. already had the bezel off once before to tighten the screws on the flat part of the lcd hinge. hate when those things get loose. thanks for the number! guess i will have to wait till monday to get a hold of them.

EDIT: i just powered this thing on and the lcd is working fine.....hmmmm....

guess i'll work with it for a while and see what happens. maybe i'll turn the contrast way down in the radeon 9000 control panel.

EDIT2: i called that number and spoke to Tony. he said that it is an internal part and that i have to call the sager support # which ALWAYS goes to voicemail and never calls you back.

how the hell do i get this part?
