I can't find the original thread to reply to here but I recall a thread where people were complaining about their fan being always on.

I've had a similar issue recently and tracked the problem down to an XP process keeping the CPU at a constant 100% CPU load. Can't recall the specific name but it's a background process that monitors memory used by the indexing background service.

As it only uses the spare CPU cycles you don't really notice it slowing down anything, but it will keep the fan on.

Run a process monitor while your machine is idle - if the CPU is an 100% check the responsible process on Google.

To disable, just remove the Indexing option from XP components - unless you do a lot of document searching you're unlikely to use it.

This definitely wasn't there on the original installation of Windows - not sure if it got in as a Windows update or installing Office.
