Compaq question

I've noticed Compaq's mentioned quite a bit here. Now I know that Compaq was purchased by HP, but my experience with the XL1700 that I purchased was so terrible (fan + dvd noise canceled out speakers, heat generated would have cooked dinner, customer service was well, they actually lied to my face and to the local service rep, refused to replace and were down right rude ) that after 6 months I gave it away (yes gave) and got a Dell.

Now my little Dell has been great and for all the bad press on Dell service. I've been treated well and my problems resolved promptly. But she's 2 years old and I can't play my last birthday presents (Games)

I may very well buy another Dell. But I don't want to rule out a different brand. I'm open to new products.

My interests are graphics (I work with digital graphics, run photoshop, have an old wacom tablet (no I'm not interested in a tablet PC)), do web development/design and gaming (although I'm more into the Myst types).

Any comments on Compaq's and or suggestions about a newer box?

Thanks guys

My old compaq lasted me ~5 years, never had anything to call support about, never had any heat or noise problems either. Its luck of the draw I guess.

Maybe, But I really couldn't hear any sound for the buzzing of the fans and DVD rattling. And the heat that thing put out!

But in any case the customer service was just dreadful, worse it was actually scary. They really did lie to me. They said that I had called and said the problem went away. I hadn't, then they said they had spoken to the local repairman (they allowed me to take it to a local shop) and he said that it was fine. I immediately called the shop after getting off the phone. Compaq had never called and talked to him or anyone at the shop.

Anyway, has HP taken over the manufacturing and support of Compaq laptops? I trust HP and would reconsider a notebook from them if they have totally taken Compaq over.

And finally, it seems that Sagar and Acer get high marks for good notebooks. True?

never owned an HP but was close to buying a Compaq, from what i've seen on the display models at BB they are mostly silent and looked ok. IF you are worried about tech support see if you can pick up a Sager or CL56 from Discounlaptops, you won't regret it.

Your one of the lucky ones. My company uses Compaq/HP SFF DT's and the biggest problems we have are replacing the fans/PS's every 6 months.

Of course the laptops will chagce over the course of the fall months, but hopefuly the tech support won't go downhill.

Just to give you an idea of the how much it will chage:

When i started to shop: AMD64 3000+ when I ended to shop AMD3700 and of course the price on the 7k60 fell from $205 (ZipZoomFly) to nearly $180 (newegg) and prices on everything else have fallen as well...c'est beacoup de l'argent.

Biggest upcommign chages: 100gb 7200 hd, PCIe and ATI 9800 will become available in non-dell lappys.

Sounds like my Xmas present to myself will be delightful!

I'm seriously looking at the CL56. I nearly clicked Add to cart! (too early for xmas) And I can pay through PayPal (no more cc bills for me).
