jebus christ wrote a 3 page review and it got nuked saying i didnt select a forum which was B.S.!!!

Anyhow. I bought a barebones Notebook ASUS L5800GA.

I bought the cpu, ram, and hd separately.

W00t!

Here is a weblink that shows the photos of my laptop!

http://www.darksideinternet.com/gall...023/index.html

Specifications:

ASUS 865PE board is integrated into this laptop.

CPU - Desktop CPU 2.8 GHz 800 MHz FSB 512 Cache.
Important Note: Prescott CPUs will not work in this laptop!!!

RAM - Laptop Memory 512 MBs 2700 PC Corsair
Important Note: I tried 512 MBs 3200 PC 400 MHz RAM did not work!!!

HARD DRIVE - Hitachi 60 Gig 7200 RPMs (yes I typed it right 7200 RPM) with 8 Meg Cache. This is a laptop hard drive not a desktop!!!

VIDEO CARD - ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 Pro 128 DDR (Wow!)
Important Note: Called ASUS and a technician informed me that the video card is upgradeable but they highly suggest they upgrade it themselves. Its upgradeable to a 9700 Pro 128 DDR. Wow! Asus rocks..

DISPLAY - 15 Inch TFT (Some models come with ACE View, mine did not) I highly rate the quality of the LCD.

AUDIO - ASUS has integrated an AC’97 CODEC from Realtek.

NIC CARD - 1000/100/10 RJ-45 Networking is taken care of by a Gigabit Ethernet network controller from 3Com.

COOLING - Uggh. It gets MAD HOT. This will heat up your n#t s#ack a bit.

FLOOPY DRIVE - CDRW/DVD ROM included.

FOUR USB Ports 1.1 / 2 - PRINTER SERIAL - COM 1 & COM 2 PORTS INCLUDED.

FIREWIRE PORT. 2 PCMCIA SLOTS - MIC, HEADPHONE, AUDIO IN JACK, SPDIF.

FLASH CARD MEMORY READER/WRITER (Wow) SD, MMC, MS, MS Select, Memory Stick Duo (with MS adapter), Memory Stick Pro, and Memory Stick Pro Duo (with MS Pro Adapter)

DC POWER INPUT JACK - INTERNAL BATTERY PACK -

Infrared Port - DC Power Input Jack - 56K Modem (Warning the built in modem does not support the voltage used in digital phone systems)

VGA & S-Video Ports

CD Controls - This can be used when you turned off the unit! Attach Headphones and listen to CDs while the unit is off. Controls in the front which include everything from volume to fast foward etc.. FANS do turn on when in this mode.

Battery Only lasts MAX 1 Hour 30 mins!!!

Initial testing.

Office XP Pro, Bryce 5, Poser 5, Macromedia Flash, Fireworks, FrontPage. Lappy handle all these with flying colors.

I went a bit deeper and installed and tested which really ran just fine.

VMware using Linux Mandrake 10, Nice & Fast with 512 MB RAM. More RAM means more performance. Using this I was able to connect to the NIC card and was able to surf online just fine.

PearPC I used and installed MAC OSX 10.3 and it too ran fine and very stable. Speed is so-so.

Gaming

I installed Command & Conquer Generals played for hours and WOW amazing.

Next I tried and Installed DOOM3

Results = NOT GOOD.

Game installed and ran fine but after 2 levels of playing in medium mode with 1024 by 768 the system Locked UP during level 2 load up. I re ran it many times and I ran a temp gauge ASUS PROBE program and it shows clearly the system was at 48 C and after just 1 level going into level 2 of playing it went up to 80C. HOly JEBUS it shot up 30 gawd damn degrees. No wonder it crashed.

I ran gamegain to add performance still crashed.

Next I am going to run the Doom3 ATI optimizer code which tells DOOM 3 to run more optimized for ATI Radeons rather than NVIDIA Cards. I found the technique posted from a developer on a forum.

I think this will just optimize the game for graphics not for over heating.

So I will try and install ASUS BOOST which overclocks and declocks the lappy. I will attempt to DECLOCK it and run it from 2.8 to maybe a 2.0 to see if I can stabilize temperatures.

One more point the manual also verifies this. This lappy can be overclocked, and has a special rocket mode built in for just that which overclocks the CPU if enabled. Hrmm....

Power 4 Gear Modes with a touch of a button on this lappy

Maximum Power Savings (Little Man running ICON)

Medium Performance (Scooter ICON)

High Performance (CAR ICON)

Maximum Performance (Airplane ICON)

Overclocking Performance (Rocket Ship ICON)

the last two only works with the AC adapter plugged in. The rest is for battery only modes.

All this is controlled by a power gear key on the top left of the lappy.

Touch pad review of this is very accurate and fast. I like the double clicking touching feature as I am a n00bie to touch pads. Also has a Touchpad lock. Has a left click button and right click button and in the middle a scroll up and down buttons.

Dragon Naturally Preferred Version 7 Review on this lappy.

Installed and ran it and it ran really nice with my saved and programed training file that i created on my desktop.

Using a nice headset I can control the entire OS via voice. works fine with AIM and other messenger services. I don't have to type anything complete control.

Including using Internet Explorer you can surf the web and check your mail online with your own voice.

Firewall I am using is ZoneAlarm 4.5. AOL informed me that ZoneAlarm 5 conflicts with their AOL 9 and 9 SE Optimized versions. So I had to down grade. I ran into other problems using Zone Alarm 5 with my WebCam XP software too. So screw version 5.

I am expecting to be delivered D-Link Wireless router and pcmcia card to use with this lappy and I will review the performace. both 802.11 G 108 Mbps. with built in firewall packet sniffing tech so they claim.

DVD Review. I watched 10 movies from 2010 to Event Horizon, very very NICE with AC Adapter.

With BATTERY ONLY watching a movie will start to freeze and stumble when the battery is getting LOW.

I ran 3DMarkSE01 test score results were 9217. I know a bit dissapointing but I am hoping I can raise the score a bit. My desktop which is comparable ranked 11,000 plus but its using a prescott CPU not a northwood like my lappy. Unsure if that makes a whopping difference.

Windows XP Pro Corp (DevilsOwn)
Service Pack 1 not 2 because of the bugs related to version 2 and software incompatibility listed by MicroSoft.

Direct X9 C

Latest Video Drivers from ASUS.

Upgraded Bios too.. BIOS can be upgraded within windows using ASUS winflash which downloads and installs a new flash during reboot. A monkey can flash the bios with this.

ASUS Boost the over clocking and declocking utility only works for desktops so my plan to declock FAILED....

I have to look for another way to stabilize DOOM 3

ASUS L5800GA - My Review!

DarkSideOracle,
Excellent, extremely helpful review!! Thanks! I've been researching/trying out various notebooks for the last four months. I've been very interested in the L5000GA series and also L5000GX. I think I read on Asus's website that the GX is replacing the GA series, but I'd have to double-check. Anyway, I've read other users say that heat can definitely be an issue under heavy load, so I'm not thrilled about that. Also, it bugs me that PC3200 RAM wouldn't work. It should, based on the specs. (Sigh) I may steer clear of this notebook after all.

I tried a Sager 5690 recently, and it was great in terms of performance. It got hot as well -- fans running all the time. This seems normal, based on user reviews in the Sager forums here. But it never crashed under heavy load -- gaming, multitasking, etc. Ultimately, it was the keyboard that made me return it. I just didn't like the feel of it. Too "mushy" for me. (Sigh)

Anyway, thanks for the terrific, thorough, detailed review and photos!

I am suprised at the 3DMarkSE2001 score. As I posted on another thread i tested a ASUS L5000D today which has a mobile AMD 3000+ and an Nvida Go FX5650 with 64 med of Vram. It scored 9762 on 3DMarkSE2001. I think 3D markSE2001 is a DirectX8 biased measure and i believe that the ATI 9600 really shines in Direct X9 games and bench marks.

is that 3dMark Score good??? or not!?

I just wanted to post new info. Currently I stated doom3 was not working because the temps rose to 80C, however I want people to take into consideration that the weather here is 108 F every day almost and at night 100 F. I have the A/C blasting but still very hot in my house. I am sure that is a factor in the crashing of DOOM 3!

I also want to add I have a friend in Australia with the same notebook and he is running it with 3200 PC RAM. I spoke to ASUS tech support and they informed me that it can take that RAM they heard from many of their customers but they are unsure which models and brands it will allow.

Next ASUS also informed that the video card is upgradeable.

New Update

Ok I had problems with Doom3 and this laptop that I reviewed about.
I finally found why Doom3 was crashing, apparently the video drivers are too old for Doom3. However ATI new Drivers will not work on this lappy. ATI drivers wont install and the website tells me to refer to my MFG which has drivers but not up to date only till July 2004. I am pretty mad about that called aSUS and they told me I got to wait for a sign from GOD till they release new drivers.

However I read a thread from another guy saying to use Omega Drivers which are good for laptops using ATI Radeon Mobility Video Cards. I thought what the heck and installed them thinking I got NUFFIN to lose at this point.

I installed them and VOILA Doom3 worked 3 levels not one crash and temps were stable. I was very very happy.

I am testing it on DVD movies and all other games and applications and re-running benchmarks to see if I can get a higher score on 3DMark.

So far so good. However when on battery mode it sucks for gaming mainly cuz the battery does not have the power output as a A/C socket does.
