My power cords keep breaking

Ok, so I have gone through two power cords now. The problem is always the same....I use my 5660 on my lap, and am not too careful with it. My bad. The connector where the power goes into the side of the lappy gets loose, and the little metal thing on the end of the cord severs from it's connection and breaks off. So I am left with a little metal connector, and then the plastic casing. If I set it up on a desk, just so, i can actually get power to my comp, but it is annoying, and it always needs slight fixing.
Can I fix this myself in any way? I believe I have a soddering iron and such, but wondered if any one had any pictures or advice they could give. I would hate to screw up and risk a fire damage, but I am getting sick of paying $80 over and over to buy new AC adapters.

I had this problem once so far. I paid for a new adapter but in addition I sent the broken one to Sager and they replaced it free. Because these things are prone to breaking (and no I really don't think it is your fault, because your use sounds pretty normal to me), I advise buying a spare so that you will not be unable to use your computer the when the connector inevitably breaks. Meanwhile, when they break, I would advise at least trying to get them to replace it for free, unless you did something abnormal to break it.

Nothing abnormal as far as usage, I noticed it started to look sorta weird when i had it on my lap, but still worked. It just got more and more worked over time, till one time, I go to remove the cord, and the metal part just stays in the jack, but the plastic cord comes out. I can get it to work, if it is sitting at just the right angle.....until last night, then it stoped working unless I put alot of pressure on it when I push it in to keep the connection.

Anyway, now I have two broken ones, does that count for a spare?

But of course. 5660 all the way. Got it in Dec of 2002. Anyway, after supreme frustration and a failed soldering attempt (never was very good at it and the gun is like 20 yrs old and sucks), I broke down and bought a new one. I mitgt send the other (that I didn't butcher trying to solder) one back for repair at a later date. Should get it in two days, but the wait is killing me.

Not abnormal? I've had notebooks that I use 10 to 12 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week for the past 10 years and never had that problem. And, yes, I do move it about, about the house, in my car, at the beach, on planes, all over. Two trips to SE Asia, half a dozen trips to the East Coast, a dozen or more trips to the West Coast. Never had that problem. Altogether, the 6 of them have maybe 60,000 to 80,000 miles on them and perhaps 15,000 hours and never a problem like that, nor might I add, any problem with cracking hinges, etc. The only thing is the paint wearing out and occasionally the keyboards give up.

Have you considered taking some care with your $2500 to $3000 toy? Maybe working with in on a proper support, which might alleviate some wear and tear on your bod as well, not to mention eyesight. Maybe not picking it up by the cords, or not resting it on the cords, or not picking it up by the lid.

oh man Marky you just jinxed yourself! >:P

strange that all the other laptops I owned and used in the same way as this one never had power cords fall apart and numerous people posting here have had the same experience with their power cords falling apart for their Sager. Why do you think they are replacing the cords for free if Sager considered the power cord problems solely due to misuse? that is great that you never had any problems with yours. that doesn't change the fact that the power cord plug is poorly designed and prone to failure with normal laptop use.

by all means if you are cocky that it is just misuse causing the plugs to fail, then don't buy a spare power cord and then when/if it happens to you and you are without your computer for a few days while you wait for a replacement to be shipped you can post here for sympathy. *cough* *cough*

I too am on my third power cord, and I too would really like to see sager offer a solution, when they do break though, you could do what I did with my second one, salvage parts from the first, it kept me going a couple of extra months
