Request for SXGA+ or WSXGA+ screen photo

Kinda strange request. I'm trying to decide between the Asus M6Ne and M6BNe. I'm concerned about text size in the SXGA+ (I know about DPI adjustments). Unfortuneately I can't find a screen to look at here in Anchorage (Office Depot, Best Buy and CompUSA is about it for computer shopping).

I'd appreciate it if someone with and SXGA+/WSXGA+ screen would take a photo and post it here for me. If you stand a quarter against the bezel, I can resize the photo on my screen to be close to real size and see what it looks like. Put up your browser with this message and open your Start menu for references.

Any takers?

Sorry... my mistake... I've edited to correct. It's the SXGA in the 15.1" screen vs WXGA in the 15.4" that I want to choose between. A photo, however of either SXGA or WSXGA (+) will serve for judging text/icon sizes.

Thanks....Peter

I know this is much help... but I remember viewing a thread in the dell section of the forum which showed WXGA, WSXGA screens.

Actually this suggestion was a great help Tourney! Here was one of the threads. There were a couple of others. I've saved the pics and will play with them later.

I was hung up on getting a reference to show the photo on my 15" XGA screen in a realistic size. Hence my request for a quarter in the pic to size the photo by. I realized that I just need to size the photo so the screen pic approximates my screen size... at least the vertical pixels (768) since these are wide screen photos.

Another thing for me to keep in mind is that, in reality, the screen will look better. Some of the clarity will no doubt be lost with all this foolin around.

Don't have any pics, but I will say this with SXGA:

I was pleasantly surprised with how readable everything was at 1400x1050. That resolution is unreadable on my Trinitron 17" CRT, but very easy to read on a laptop.

I wouldn't let it scare you.

I'm very surprised that SXGA+ looks significantly better on a 15" lcd than a 17" crt (that is what you are saying isn't it?

I realized a bit ago that I used to run some in between resolution on my 15" crt about 6 years back. I think it was 1152 x 864 or thereabouts and that was ok. I didn't want to go up to 1280 x 1024 on that screen, so I'm nervous about 1400 x 1050. Perhaps it really will be better on an LCD? (I hope I got all those dimensions correct!).

It may boil down to ordering and returning if I have to. I can get the M6Ne and exchange for M6Bne if I can't handle the resolution. I just hate to do that to resellers.

Well, I'm still having difficulty getting a confident assessment.

I did think of another approach during my sleep last night

I computed the ratio between XGA and SXGA+ and applied it to dpi. XGA is 1024x728, SXGA+ is 1400x1050.

1024/1400=.73
.73x96dpi=71dpi.

So I set my 15" XGA screen at 71dpi. I think I got an ok idea. I realize text will be sharper with a true SXGA+ screen, but the size of text should be pretty accurate. If this was it, I couldn't live with it. With the real screen being sharper, maybe. So I'm still in limbo, but leaning towards WXGA to play it safe.

is widescreen comfortably portable?
in the store i thought that 15" was the max for portability.
(im also about to pass up free upgrade to 15.4 inch widescreen from HP tonite)

It depends on the model. The Asus in my sig is 13.9" x 10.9" x 1.4" and 6.4 lbs. You'll have to decide if that is portable enuf for ya. It is for me. It's virtually the same size as my two year old Gateway 450 that has a 15" screen and it is only a 1/4 lb. heavier.

I have the M6N 15.1" SXGA+ screen and it looks really nice.

That's what I'm saying. It's weird, but it probably has to do with the refresh rate of my monitor not being optimum at that resolution.

However, with SXGA, this is its native resolution so it looks great.
