Thread Starter
Hey guys Love the Forum
I am going to buy a Acer-Ferrari 3200 in the next week or so but have few questions have to ask. thank you for the help

First is the speed!

Acer-Ferrari 3200 VS. Chem book CL56 at 1.8P-M with 512 MB Ram? which is faster for Video and photoshop work?

second question is I have one 512 pc2100 ram could I install another 1GB pc 2700 ram in the same computer?

also if I open the keyboard to upgrade the ram is warrently no longer work on the unit. and one last question is could I upgrade the CPU later

thank you so much

jin

p.s. anyone has any info on Emachine vs. ferrari 3200 amd 64 3400+ vs. 2800

The speed will probably favor the Ferrari, simply because the Athlon 64 is a more powerful chip than the Dothan. It's also much better on memory bandwidth. And when the 90 nm LP Athlon 64s come out, the Ferrari will have some very dangerous upgrades.

Memory wise, PC2100 and PC2700 are only compatible if the chipsets allow them to be compatible. Personally, I wouldn't mix speeds.

I can't help you on the warranty question (I don't own either laptop), but for upgradability, I would say most definitely, at least to other Low Power Athlon 64s (which is what the Ferrari comes with). And, coincidently, the 90 nm LP Athlon 64 3000+ is supposed to be coming out shortly.

The Acer Ferrari 3200 is slightly faster, especially on video.

There are two memory slots on the Acer Ferrari 3200, but both are occupied with 256MB PC2700 memory sticks. If you mix memory speeds it will only run at the lowest memory speed.

If you contact your dealer for approval prior to upgrading the second memory slot I don't think you need to worry about the warranty. It should be possible to upgrade the CPU, but I don't know how easy it will be to do. Upgrading the CPU will definately void the warranty unless you get Acer to do it for you.

By the way you should also know that Acer is coming out with the Ferrari 3400 in a couple of months time, probably november. They say that it will have slighty higher specs but crucially have the new 90 nm LP Athlon 64s in 3200+, or 3400+ speeds.

Can you please post links as to where you got your information?

Aye, where'd you get that info. I Googled "Acer Ferrari 3400" and "Ferrari 3400" and got nothing.

Ya, your going to have to back up that statement. I hope your right, but I doubt it.

Well, there's a new low-power Mobile Athlon 64 3000+ coming soon but that's probably it this year:

I guess the Ferrari will be upgraded with this 2.0GHz processor, that will reduce the power consumption with about 10% compared to the current 2800+ CPU:

The first wave of mobile Athlon 64 chips, which are based on a processor core code-named Oakville, use the process to reduce power consumption. A source familiar with the chips said they will average about 31 watts, a reduction of about 10 percent from AMD's existing low-power mobile Athlon 64s.
Personally, I'll probably wait untill the low-power Mobile Athlon 64 3200+ "Lancaster" (1MB L2 cache & 25W TDP) becomes available next year before I upgrade.

The Acer Ferrari 3400 is now listed at AMDboard.com http://www.amdboard.com/athlon_64_notebook.html but what I can see from the fiew photos the chasie looks exactly the same which is no surprise, same motherboard and GPU too acoarding to the fiew specs given. I wonder if it will have an UXGA screen instead of SXGA+? That would be awesome. If it would, I would buy it. But I'm almost sure it will not... Acer doesn't have a single model with UXGA screen.

It comes with a different mouse

Cool, the Ferrari 3200 sucks now. It's old and outdated. The 3400+ is for cool people. Poor Snorre.
It would be nice if they put in a faster harddrive and a gig of ram with the upgraded Ferrari.
The Ferrari 3400 will feature a faster CPU, a low-power Mobile Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0GHz), the rest of the specs will remain the same AFAIK. Since this is an Oakville it will also have a slightly better battery life than the Odessa on the Ferrari 3200. Besides, the Ferrari 3200 can actually be upgraded with a faster CPU too when available according to the service manual. I think I'll wait untill Lancaster ships next year before I upgrade though
