That's right...Dell's 30 day hold on the MR9800 started on the 28th of July. 30 days later it should be widely available by other notebook manufactures.

well the way i see it, the first company to offer a:

17 inch WSXGA/WUXGA Glossy Screen
AMD64 3700+
ATI MR9800

gets my money right away, for sure, no second thoughts.
most definitly gets my cash too
same here. I would take that card in an instant if they offered it as an upgrade for the 4750.
Ditto, They got my money.
Take away the glossy screen, and they got my money, too! (and a bit extra for the 2 or 3 12 cell batteries I'd have to buy for actual portability.. lol).

Or just give nu-shield some of my money... either way.

Money is ready Luke@PCTorque...... I'm just waiting for the product =].

what kind of battery does the current 4750 use? does a 12 cell fit?...would i have to remove anything for it to fit?

also why not the glossy screen. have you seen it? it makes the black really look black and the white looks really white. all colors look sharpe and beautiful. it makes photoshop stuff awesome!

I was in japan last month, almost all the notebooks had glossy screens....amazing stuff. (my fiance's toshiba Dynabook has one..I love it)

the subnotebooks had the best looking screens i saw - 10" 1280x720 really sweet.

Ideal for me -

(im XSI / Shake / Photoshop etc)

3700+
9800 (FireGl varient would be great )
WUXGA Glossy (1920x1200 goodness...connect a external 23" acd...and im set)
DVI second port
vhd u320 port would be lovely...

then you would be getting close to a desktop replacement

I don't want glossy because it would be annoying given my lighting situation here at school...

I think i found something close to my 'dream laptop', though... not sure what you guys know/think about the Mayhem G3 but it's got everything except the 9800...

http://www.abspc.com/app/Series.asp?...o=25&series=76

It says it can take up to the mobile 3400 or 3700, but those aren't options on the configuration page - i just presume they haven't been selected yet..

Anyone have any comments on this laptop (or should I make a thread to see if others know about it)? [i did do a search, btw.. came up with little] Seems small (15"), light, and powerful.... toss a 9800 in there, and i'd be sold....

EDIT: Found reviews of Mayhem G3 on here... I guess I'm just retarded and missed them when I searched at first...

quadro...sounds to me that you are making a big mistake!

have you gone to a store to look at the difference between the 2 screens?

i planned on not getting the bright screen, but i went to best buy and it had a side by side comparison of a regular emachines screen, vs. a sony a series. i could see the a series from so far back (thats how it caught my attention) while with the emachines i had to walk right up to it to see it.

the bright screen is the closest you will get to an LCD monitor that looks more like a CRT monitor (glass screen tube picture). it is unbelievable awesome!

if you have already seen it and don't want it, i guess we are just 2 completly different people, because to me its like night and day. its an obvious choice. i was close to buying the hp zv5000z, but then i saw a 17 inch bright glossy screen and i couldnt go back.

I agree with I4ever..that sony glossy bright screen is to die for..the others looks so dull standing next to it..
but which one looks better with a big window right behind you on a sunny day?
Neither do, because LCD screens don't work well outside. I've tested my 8790 (glossy 17" screen) versus a Toshiba (15.4" screen, not glossy) and both sucked outside. The colors wash out on both of them. If you're going to use it outside or in the direct path of the sun, be prepared to be dissapointed by the picture you get.

I took my 5690 to the pool on a sunny day and placed it on a table, turned it on and I couldn't see sh*t, literally.

BTW: I hope the 9800 will be available as an upgrade to the 5690, because I will definately jump on it faster than a safari of pygmies from the african interior

Like Proffesso said, most of the notebooks here have the glossy screens. Except the eMachines. And yes, those screens suck. All of the ones I've seen looked severely washed out (and that's WITHOUT the sun's help).

Not sure anything can compete w/ the sun at the moment. Just have to accept that Mother Nature's tougher'n notebooks right now.

uh. not going to happen in near future guys:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=17463

so basically, if you want the MR9800 you gonna have a monster laptop to fit it in. don't think it will fit in anything less than say, 1.5 inches thick at least

It's really unlikely any other notebooks will have the 9800. Diffrent form factor from the 9700 so upgrading isn't easy. The Dell XPS/9100 systems seemed to have been designed from the start to allow for the larger board and heat sinc the 9800 has.

With PCI-E coming out there is really no reason for ODM's to develop a case and mother board to accomodate the 9800. They are better off concentrating on designs for PCI-E.

The 9800 will be the last of it's kind. The T-Rex of the AGP world. But's it's reign will be short lived and like the rest of the dinosaurs will soon be extinct.

So in other words, some of these guys in this thread should have been a bit more patient
post #19 of 38
Isn't the 5690 rather thick? I am pretty sure its thicker than 1.5".

How does upgrades work?
