Advice from current ASUS W1N Owners

A couple of forum members have pointed out that the ASUS W1N might be good choice for me. There's nowhere local for me to try out, so could current W1N owners please tell me:

1. How does the keyboard feel? (Too soft, too springy, too shallow, etc.) I'm quite particular about the tactile feel.
2. How is the 1680 by 1050 resolution? I like my fonts on the "smallish" side, but not too small. Where I live, I haven't been able to see a single laptop from any brand with this resolution to compare.
3. Overall impression after extended use? (I've read most of the "just got it" reviews.)

Thanks in advance.

Ozone,

I have two of these laptops and been using them for about 3 months. I'm using that at home so they don't get the workout that my work machines get. Still, I'll take a crack at your questions.

1. I like the keyboard...alot. It's wide enough and stiff enough. I like it significantly better than the laptop keyboards that I use at work. The only downside to the keyboard is the "insane" placement of the FN key where the ctl key belongs .

2. The resolution is small. I decreased the resolution for my wife which of course makes the screen a little less clear. I use it at the full resolution. Since most programs let you "scale up" text, I haven't had a problem. I do end up using the Firefox (mozilla) browser over IE 6.0 because it makes it easy to scale up web page fonts.

3. 4 stars out out 5. No problems with either unit. It looks great and both units have run w/o issue out of the box. I even used the ASUS update program to flash the bios. No problems. On the downside, I'd prefer the 9700 with 128 MB for gaming, a faster harddrive and a dothan chip. Still, these haven't turned out to be a big issue for me yet.

Good luck with your selection.

Hey thanks hgilson... I actually found out that a local supplier can get the W1N for $2900 Cdn, which is about $2100 US. I mentioned this on another thread, but the supplier suggested IBMs, and I understand that IBMs have superior keyboards. Sooooo... it's sort of coming down to the Asus W1N, a really pricey ThinkPad T42, or a much cheaper HP zt3350US. There is the issue of warranty though: I can get IBMs and HPs repaired in town, not Asus.

Ozone, in what area of Canada is located the supplier you mentioned?
After 2 weeks of shopping and gathering informations, I think I'll go for the W1N.

Ozone,

Good luck with your choice. With limited experience on IBMs, I'd say that keyboard is better. The T42 has great specs and IBM makes great notebooks. I doubt you'll be unhappy with either choice.

$2100 ouch...I paid a couple hundred dollars more than that times two.

Take care and good luck.

Ozone,

I would also be interested in finding what Canadian supplier you found that offers the W1N for $2900.

Do a Google search with the terms "Asus W1N Canada" and you should a few vendors to pop. There were two in Vancouver and one in Toronto. A lot of other places can get them in as well, but you have to ask. The one in Toronto is called "etc computers" and yes, I did get a real live call back, so they do exist.

I ended up NOT getting an Asus; not because I don't want it, but because the laptop I'm getting is mainly a work machine. I got an R3000, mostly because of the local warranty and accessory support.

they'll order one for you from their distributor if you email them or call them up... not too many places like to keep them lying around

you can pretty much ask any asus retailer in canada to special order one for you... and they most likely can get one within 1 to 2 business days

nice thing about that is Asus is fixing the prices, per region, so special order vs any other retailer should be similar pricing (I would think)
