Extra drive in XP Home

When i go into My Computer in Windows XP Home it shows a Cd-ROM drive, CD-R/W, and DVD drive. The problem is I only actually have the first two, i don't have a DVD drive. Another computer that i have on my network has a DVD drive, but i never mapped the drive or anything like that, any ideas?

Is your cdrom a multifunction (combo) device? My 8886 has a cdrom/cdrw/dvd combo drive. One physical drive and one icon in windows? Are you saying there's 3 icons in windows on your machine?

I had the same problem not to long ago and I discovered that the program 'Alcohol 120%' was the culprit. The “ghost drive” (as I call it) was listed as a virtual drive in My Computer. I uninstalled the program and the problem was resolved.

My advice would be to check any CD writing/recording software you may have recently installed.

Hope that helps.

Wow, you nailed it on the head there. I installed Alcohol 120% a little while ago, then another program along the same lines. I knew the second program made a logical drive but it never clicked that Alcohol 120% did the same thing. thanx for the help!

No problem. I’m just glad that it was that simple and not something more serious.

One of the great things about this forum is that everybody is so willing to help each other.
