The move to pci-e like everyone says is the best move for them and consumers. The upgradeablility aspect of it is the single most important feature that laptop users have been harping about for years. Since this board's inception it has been the most requested feature and this move will finally make it a standard.

imho, an excellent move by sager/clevo
Agreed!

I'm not sure where you came up with that, since no on has reported on the performance of the M28. From the discussions on this forum, the PCI-E M28 may be similar to the M18 performance-wise, in the same way that the M24/X600 is basically a PCI-E M11.

I entirely agree on the upgradeability aspect.

Well, this is going OT, but seeing as they're the only company that makes an external tuner you don't have much choice (yet). Sasem is based in Korea which shares the same HDTV standards as the US, so the hardware is generally compatible. I know at least one of the other main companies (MIT) making internal HDTV cards is also based in Korea. The PC HDTV tuner technology still isn't perfect and there are many conflicting standards, not to mention the different types of signals and encryption for Cable HDTV broadcasts. As I understand it, the broadcast flag will be a record-once flag, so you'll still be able to timeshift HDTV viewing, but not make copies.

Don't you mean College Gaming Season? Think of how much studying you'll get done while waiting for the new notebooks.

I see. My friend said that broadcasters can actually prevent you from recording shows if they wanted to. And that would suck especially if everyone stops broadcasting in analog. Well, let's hope this next model can carry a TV tuner that won't go out of date when all the networks switch to HDTV and ditch the NTSC. Or maybe an upgradeable one (the tuner/capture card, not just the GPU) would be nice for the PCI-E lappy. Would be nice though if the tuner doesn't take the broadcast flags like current ones don't.

J4ever, if you order as soon as pcie comes out you should have it before / by thanksgiving, which isn't too bad. You'll be too busy meeting people / studying the first half of the semester anyways, you probably wont need a computer for anything besides comp sci classes (if you're taking any) and writing english papers.

It's definetely worth it to wait, dont make a mistake you'll be regretting for the rest of the time you have your laptop.

Agreed! While some of the others put a little more work into explaining why it's best to wait, none of the reasons should've been mysterious or hard to figure out for someone of college age. Therefore I think Sharakkhal summed it up best.

I wanted a PCIE system but i need something for college (required) So i got the 5690. My theory is if you always want to wait for the top of the line then your never going to get it because your always be waiting. You might as well but what is top today and live with it for a while then if you can upgrade every now and then.

actually i will need my laptop. i couldnt give **** less about pci-e. and to telly you the truth, i care more about the processor than the gpu. if ati 9700 is all that's available when i need to buy, that is fine with me. the processor on the other hand MUST be an AMD64 3700+. I would hate to have the 2nd best socket 754 chip when the last socket 754 chip is the 3700+ and that is the best of the 754's. I will be using my laptop for playing Doom 3, watching DVD's, editing video with Adobe Premier Pro, using Photoshop, editing music with SoundForge, creating Flash animation with Macromedia Flash MX, keeping track of NFL scores/fantasysports teams, and using my Sasem OnAir USB HDTV tuner to watch tv and play xbox games on my laptop. Of course I will also use it for doing school work and such. So having a fast computer is very important to me. I would like to buy a Sager ASAP and I really think this whole R&D thing is a bunch of BS for the 3700+ because it is 81.5w just like the 3400+. It is a upgrade that fits exact and since other Clevo's are already selling it, they should to. Just pop it in and sell.

So far the stuff that I bought/have for my laptop are:

iRiver ihp-40 40gb mp3 hdd player
USB cable for my Sanyo VM4500 phone
Sony MDR-V700 headphones
STM Large Loop backpack
Logitech MX900
StopTheft security
Kensington MicroSaver guaranteed notebook replacement
Monster PowerCenter PC800
Arctic Silver 5

Ya same here i was worried more about the processor for compiling and program diagnostics and the whole kitten kaboodle.

That sums up everything I need in a laptop. But upgradeable laptops seem nice, though, unless the current ones can last for 3-4 yrs (i.e. support any new Windows unlike a previous PC I had with its integrated onboard graphics, playing latest games, etc). Though I certainly don't have all of those accessories, you could buy a temporary laptop just with those. I'm just using the same software and external hardware I'm currently using now. Saves money

J4ever

Why don't you buy from the others that are selling it now then?

if you think Sager is BSing you buy it from one that isn't.

FACT even in the Intel P4, same votage same wattage differnet speed = differnet clock multiplier = differnet heat / stability output.

so stop and buy it from someone that has it now, if timing is such a issue.

GPU is the biggest bottleneck for gaming.. but if you don't care about PCIE or the GPU why are you flooding the boards with posts on the 9800? Obviously it IS important to you... That be said, buy it already..go to Hypersonic if Sager doesn't have the 3700..end of the debate for you...

uhh

Should i buy a 3790 from sager, or should i wait for a few months for the PCI-E notebooks? And what do u think a centrino based laptop with pci-e will cost? Will it come out soon or will it come out later?

If you really need a laptop now and plan on getting another one anyways several years from now, then get the 3790. Otherwise, just wait and see. There's really nothing concrete yet.

Pentium-M/Centrino PCI-E won't be out until next year Q1 at the earliest, but more likely Q2 (Spring-Summer).

PCI-E notebooks shouldn't cost any more than notebooks today. It's just a new interface. It may actually be cheaper to manufacture because of the modularity, not that companies would pass the savings on to the consumer. Prices will depend on what graphics card you choose and of course, you'll pay extra for more performance.

Broadcasters can set some standards on how the content is used. I don't believe that they can keep you from saving it at all. Also, the FCC just added a bunch of stuff to this for Tivo, Microsoft, and others that want to allow you to bring content with you.

So would it still be possible to say record and save something on your notebook or TV (via VCR or TiVo) and transfer it to the other?

Lets say you got your 3700+ and 1 month later they announce 3800+ or 3900+ or 4000+. What are you going to do then? Buy what you need and be happy with it. I have a p4 3.4 in my 8790 and it is running all of the applications you mentioned extremely well.
i wouldnt care about 38/39/4000 because those are socket 939 and won't fit a 754. the last amd64 socket 754 is 3700+.
