Asus M6 DVD writer vs. combo drive

Powernotebooks just informed me that there is a $50 rebate on the dvd writer drive making it a $79 upgrade. The drive Asus uses is only 2x for writing dvds (probably why they are rebating). I'm inclined to get an external since standards and speeds are changing so rapidly, but it might be convenient to have a dvd writer handy wherever I am even if it is a bit slow.

My concern is any negatives of getting the dvd writer over the combo drive other than the $79 cost. Any flakiness, added noise... etc?

Thanks for any experiences.

Edit: My mistake. The DVD writer is 4x write and 2x rewrite. Powernotebooks indicates that the rebate incentive is due to a relative shortage of the combo drive. Sorry about that.

$79?? What and where can you get an 8x external for that little?

$22 plumax firewire external enclosure (got it on sale)
$53 LiteOn LDW451S (4x) flashed to LDW832S (8x) [but you can get the true 8x drive for an additional $30 anyway, so it may or may not be worth the risk]

no coasters yet.

I got my liteon 851S for $69 at officemax AR/AC. Put it into an enclosure I got from a CD-RW that I got free AR/AC. Net cost, $69

Amazing prices. I will have to look into doing it that way rather than paying for an ready made external.
