First ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility ships

SIS 648 + SIS 963 chipset inside

By Fuad Abazovic: Saturday 31 May 2003, 11:43

AS PROMISED, the Radeon 9600 Mobility shipped in its first commercial product Gericom Overdose Radeon 9600 15" TFT, which looks like one powerful notebook machine.
Gericom, an Austrian firm, has a notebook using a configuration based on the Pentium 4 2.2 GHz chip, the SIS chipset and the Radeon 9600 Mobility with 64 or 128MB of memory.

It also has a 60GB hard drive, DVD recorder, modem, LAN card, and sound and costs €1760.

Gericom is already shipping these machines and selling it from its web site, where you can tweak the configuration.

The machine weighs 2.5Kg which isn't a bad weight for would-be road warriors. µ

I believe it is the M10 Pro

Wow, I can't believe that someone is finally shipping the 9600 and on top of that it is the pro with 128 mb. memory.. thanks for the info it is very helpful. Hopefully we will see some notebooks shortly in the US that have the new M10P...

Ok...

What is the MAIN difference between the pro and the non-pro? I have used both the Radeon 9700 pro and the non-pro and really couldnt tell any difference...same FPS...same everything...??

the Pro has a higher clock and DDR2 memory.... so it's much better. Hopefully Sager will be competitive and ship w/ the M10Pro!

It's a huge different in performance between Radeon 9600M, Radeon 9600M Pro, GeForceFX Go5600 and GeForceFX Go5600 Ultra... I saw they run the test on HardOcp.com... here is the result from the fastest to the slowest...

GeForceFX Go5600 Ultra -> Radeon 9600M Pro -> Radeon 9600M -> GeForceFX Go5600

isn't that article at Hardocp on the desktop versions? I'm pretty sure it is and there isn't a Go 5600 Ultra in the nVidia line up.

Kasteo I could have swore I saw the 9600pro beating the 5600ultra at hardocp

the nvidia chip won in like 2 tests out of over 16 or so

what im talking about

also when or if you dare to oc the m10pro you should get a nice bump in speed. The nvidia card I highly doubt your be able to oc (perhaps a tad) since its the sister to the 5800ultra (it needed wicked cooling)

oh well im all about image quality anyway

Nvidia confusion...

Wait a minute.........someone help me out here

Nvidia's mobile lineup includes the GeForce FX Go5600 and Go5200, but NO Ultra as far as I am aware. However their desktop lineup includes the ultra models...GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, 5900, 5600 Ultra, 5600, 5200 Ultra, and 5200.

Tom's hardware also confirms that between ATI & Nvidia the new mobile cards will be the Radeon Mobility 9600 PRO, Radeon Mobility 9600, Radeon Mobility 9200, GeFroce FX Go5600, and GeForce FX Go5200, but NO ultras. http://www4.tomshardware.com/mobile/20030324/index.html

I think we are confusing benchmarks with desktop cards. While the mobile variants are based on the desktop card, there have been a few "tweaks" made for the mobile variants. Does anyone know of comparative benchmarks that show which MOBILE card is superior (I know we can assume which is superior based on desktop performance, but I want to see some benchmarks where mobile cards are compared)?

Direwolf, the one that you look at they base on the old GeForceFX 9600 technology. Nvidia just tweak some silicon magic on the new one and it's about 50% faster than the old one. You can take a look at the test here...

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDc4LDQ=

As you can see, Nvidia GeForceFX 5600 Ultra beat ATI Radeon 9600Pro as high as 25% in some test.

well, unless you are buying a desktop, that article is pretty irrelevent.

Also, what's perhaps the coolest thing about the pro version, and of all other cards that's ever existed, is its overdrive feature. M10 Pro is going to be equipped with a thermo-sensor that modulates clock speed depending on temperature. If the temperature permits, the card automatically overclocks its processing. Here's a link:

Sets room temp to "extra cold" in preperation for the m10pro, and drools.
