What's a good place to buy a mac?

I've been thinking about getting a Mac when "Tiger" comes out but don't know where I should buy it from. Preferably I'd like to avoid the taxes unless the educational discount will outweigh that.

Does the Apple store online charge tax?

Any good Apple resellers?

Yes, but do they charge tax when you order via their website?

Why would u want an apple?

I would only buy a G4 powerbook at this point - software for the 64 bit G5 is harder to come by.

And, the only reason you should consider getting a mac is for their picture processing capabilities; A PC would suit you better in every other situation - especially gaming.

Mainly for experience (which is why I'm aiming for the low end eMacs) and partly to just have a work computer where the temptation to game is cut down significantly and can avoid most of the problems plaguing Windows (i.e. a large community of virus makers.)

Also I didn't get a job because I didn't know how to use Macs

Apple charges tax if you order from them.

I just got a 17 inch PB for 2857 with educational discount and tax.

Basicly no one out there can beat the educational discount for Macs. I use to sell Macs on campus when I was in school. Often the prices we had wer 500-1500 dollars less then normal retail prices.

BTW, when I was sellling macs a 128mb stick of RAM cost $7,800

So instead of a $5500 PC, its only $5000... nice.

ps- Apple is completely full of themselves...

wish i could get a discount. ive looked at a few places and the prices have been pretty much the same. i saw a video on the g5's coming out. i dont even wanna guess what those prices will be. i love the powerbooks.

What's stopping anyone from using the educational discount? Do they ask for a photocopy of your ID or schedule?

Try Ecost.com for Apple computers and accessories, they're an authorized dealer and tax is only charged if you live in CA.

i've always wanted a G4 or G5 to play around with, but they're not worth the $$$ to just "play around with..."

you're right. i have a g4. its older but ive played around with OS X, which is the only cool thing about apples in general.

this is comming from a guy who has used macs more than pcs too.

my parents are teachers so naturally they bought macs when i was younger. then eventually i built my own PC desktop. now i have this lappy

OSX is not limited to G3/G4/G5 anymore anyways... ever since PearPC came out...
if you want to "play" with one, just start showing up at the apple store every afternoon and don't leave until you are asked.

The only good thing about Macs is the OS, and maybe firewire800 (but thats not mac limited anymore)...
