Found a problem with my 3790 - Page 3

ok, i appreciate all your inputs and help but let me repeat my self. I have done everything mentioned and NONE OF THEM WORK. i have speed switch, cpu-z, and multiple benchmarks. all of them show exactly what i described. I am pretty convinced that this "feature" is intended to save battery time by never allowing the proc to go into full power. Very stupid in my opinion and we need a bios update that will allow the software to control the cpu throttling. Let ne summarize again.
In the bios there are three settings. 1. maximum battery which will always run the CPU at 600mhz. Software has no control of the cpu speed. so windows, speedswitch etc arent doing anything. 2. maximum performance which will always run the CPU at max speed. in my case 1700. again software has no control. 3. variable, the cpu will run at 600mhz with battery and 1700 with the adapter. again, speedswitch and other software has no control.

and other than that i love the laptop, lets hope this gets fixed soon.

shhh... don't say that!!!! (love part)

Now youve gone and messed it all up!!!

Here's what I see happening:

I set my system to max performance, and I installed speedswitchXP.

I do have relative control over the system, although it now runs very hot. The fan doesn't come on nearly often enough, I think. It will allow me to run at 1700 while on battery...but how do I get the fan to be a little more active?

What temperature is very hot? It really matters what temp it is. Does it burn your skin?
Well, I was rebooting to check something out, otherwise I would have edited that post for more info.

Here it is: No, it is not hot enough to burn skin - but it is quite warm. I'd say it's running at at least 90+ degrees (That is, it becomes UNCOMFORTABLE to have on my lap for an extended period of time.)

In addition, I went back to the BIOS and reset the notebook to "Automatically Swtich". Now it no longer ever goes _below_ 600Mhz, which concerns me also. That is to say, the Core Speed in CPU-Z or SpeedswitchXP ALWAYS stays at at least 600Mhz.

I am going to try rebooting with SpeedSwitch turned off at boot and the Portable/Laptop setting enabled in the power settings, and see if that problem remains. Being that I will be carrying this around a lot, I would love to have ACTUAL CONTROL over it, but I do need the battery life also.

Internal wise 90 F is nothing to worry about. If it is Celsius I would return it though.
Okay, I can state now that the processor never dips below 600Mhz now that I have turned speedswitch off.

It should be going down to at least 200Mhz, I think? I mean, that's what I recall it doing before I installed speedswitch.
I think 300 mhz is the lowest it can go.
Well, whether or not that is the case, the fact is it is no longer going there.

A few days ago, when I would disable speedswitch, it would go to standard settings.
I'm not sure what to do now. I suppose I could try re-installing the original processor drivers.

Oh, and mobile-meter reports that my HDDTemp is 45C, right now. Is that okay?
Mine hard drive temp gets up to 55C when on the battery. Its hot but it doesn't destroy the hard drive. They are pretty resilient.

Okay, I've reset everything, and it still gets stuck at 600 for minimum speed.

That's a little annoying, really. Does anyone know how to fix that?

dude, who told you it is supposed to go below 600mhz ? if its functioning correctly it should be switching back and forth between your cpu rated max clock and 600mhz only. nothing below that and nothing in between. is yours doing that ?

Has anyone found a solution yet ?

Compuatic -

I checked the speed several times before I began fiddling with it, and it was running as low as 297Mhz when I was simply typing in MSWord.

I've noticed that it would also choose speeds anywhere between that and 1700 MHz while doing other tasks.

There is a definite solution - if you set it to maximum performance at all times, and then to max performance in speedstep, I could force switches between the two speeds. But my notebook also began to get hot, so I'm going back to the standard power settings - all I'm doing is typing most of the time. I might go back to the Max Performance in BIOS though if no one knows if the processor ever slows down further, and anyone knows as way to configure the fan settings.

To me its depends on how they come off sounding. If their whole post makes them sound like a two year old, then its annoying. However, I understood exactly what he was saying, so I had no problem with it. Come on guys, he's asking for help with his laptop not in correcting his grammar. And I know, when I get to typing passionately.. I make some doozer errors heh

Does this mean 3790 users will experience sub-par gaming performace unless the laptop is plugged in?
I, too, have noticed this issue on my 3790. This first became apparent to me while playing Doom3. I am able to blaze through this game with settings on "high" and a resolution of (I can't remember the exact resolution setting and I'm away from my lappy right now) 1200 X 800 (?) without any difficulty or choppiness -- as long as I'm plugged-in to AC. When on battery, I can't set the game's video options low enough to avoid any choppy framerates.
This is not an issue for me as I realize this is going to preserve my battery while I'm at school. It also serves as a deterrent for me to avoid gaming diversions when I really need to be focusing my attentions on studies. I can, however, understand why this would be a big deal to some and could stop someone from ordering this product who otherwise would love to have it.
I can only hope there is a BIOS fix (or whatever needs to be fixed) so that each user can efficiently customize power settings to best suit his/her needs for the day.

No, it automatically throttles up. I don't have the problem these guys are talking about. I explained how to setup the bios and speedswitch earlier in this post.

Draw,
What's your battery life with the 12 cell at with your current BIOS and SpeedswitchXP settings?
What Patchmonkey has noticed makes me reluctant to fiddle with anything. I typically run my CPU at 300mHz when doing basic word processing, powerpoint, etc. Why would I want to lock it at over 600? What will that do to my battery life.
Draw, what does your CPU throttle down to when you are performing basic tasks?

All of the battery test that I did were on the settings I have now. The cpu never goes below 600mhz when it's on battery. There's no need to go lower than that. When it needs more, it will throttle up to 800mhz, 1000mhz, etc.. You'll lose more having your screen on the brightest setting than having your cpu running faster. It's a low power cpu, so even at full throttle, it's not taking that much battery life.
