cheese you are not getting support from india because you are in oregon, but rather because you skimped out on the warranty. buy a better warranty such as GTS and you wont have that "problem" - i dont see what the big deal with the indian representatives is - they are fine to me.

hey, free usb hub!
I know, right! I'm planning on using the hub to connect my mouse and printer; the remaining port I'll use for flash drives. I really don't care much about 1.1 being slower for the mouse and printer...

PS -- 2.0 is back-compatible with 1.1, right?
Yeah, you can use a USB 2.0 device on a USB 1.1 port.

Good... *evil thoughts*

Um, yeah. Right.

it'll run slower though, so i wouldnt use it for something that transfers large files or data.

There is a lot of confusion about USB1.1 and USB 2.0. There is 3 speeds in USB, slow !.5Mbs, full 12Mbs, and Hi Speed 480Mbs. Mice and keyboards only run at slow or 1.5mbs they do not need any more speed. Some devices use full or 12MBs like the older USB1.1 usb memory keys and older hdd enclosures. The new hard drive enclosures and USB memory keys use Hi speed USB 2.0 or 480mbs max. If you buy a USB 1.1 hub you should know that the max speed of any device is the max speed of the slowest device. That saying if you plug in a keyboard or mouse into the hub then plug a usb memory key or USB HDD into it the maximum speed of all the devices is 1.5Mbs due to the fact that the mouse. It is the same for a USB2.0 hub except that some or most now come with a translator hub so that no matter what type of device is plugged into will run up to its maximum speed. One more point if you buy a mouse or keyboard and it say USB 2.0 it does not mean it has speeds up to 480Mbs its is only a marketing gimmick.
Conclusnsions:
1)All USB devices will work woth any other USB devices but it may slow down other USB devices or it maybe slowed down by other USB devices.
2)When using only USB 1.1 hubs all hi Speed devices will slow way down.
3) When choosing a USB 2.0 Hub check to make sure it has a Translator hub which will allow slower USB devices and faster USB devices to coexist at their maximum speeeds

my dad just purchased a maxtor one touch, and i'm pretty sure his winxp laptop which is about a year and a half old has usb 2.0, but the transfer speed of the maxtor drive is increeeedibly slow... i'm thinking it's doing the slow .5mbs speed you just mentioned

i didnt look at it myself but my dad is reasonably tech savvy and he said during the installation of the device it said something about his usb port being slow so the drive will operate at the low speed... any thoughts come to mind?

A year and a half ago dates back to about the time USB 2.0 was first introduced in laptops and mainly in the more expensive one. It sounds like it is only a USB 1.1 port. One way to check is to go into the control panel, system and then device manager and click on USB down at the bottom. If it doenst say USB 2.0 its not. If it does he may need to update his USB drivers. Best option is to buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card and use that to attach to the Drive through that.
