According to the manual, it is 6 pin (which is usually powered) but it is not powered... I think they did it that way to enable laptop users not to have to get a converter for it. I think it's actually a pretty cool idea... So just get stuff 6 pin and get the power cable for them. Hope that helps (and if someone has different experiences, let us know)!

You may be right. I don't have any 6 pin devices to confirm this. My camcorder and digital camera are both 4 pin. I thought it was actually powered. The 8886 has a 6 pin and the 5660 has a 4 pin which made me assume the 8886 was powered.

Ditto... I assumed and then Roy pointed me to the manual and it says otherwise. I can see why it wouldn't be because of the laptop power supply being a lot smaller than a desktop one. If anyone knows this for certain, let us know! (I can check when it gets here, lol.)

i created that thread because of your remark in the manual to know more.. well i guess if the laptop is going to be sitting on a desk most of the time it is not a big deal i guess to use the (external hard drive) the power supply.. but it is good to know that 6 pin and 4 may have more in common that we may think..hmm..

Yeah, thank you for your consideration :-) I will definitely check on it when I get the 8886. I've got a 6 pin firewire peripheral around that I can use. I'll get back to everyone about it... If anyone already has checked, let us know!

Yeah, my friend here has a netcam that is firewire and has to have a powered firewire port to run, so I'll try it on there (of course that would have to be after break...). If I find something during break I will do it then, of course.
