Gaming on Widescreen Laptops...

I'm seriously considering the sager 3790 for mostly school but I want to be able to game.

Mainly UT2004, Warcraft 3, CS: Source, & World of Warcraft.

I've heard that WoW won't be widescreen enabled...

So for games that do not support widescreen what happens?

I'd assume that black bars would appear on the left and right hand of the screen keeping its original res.. Which I'd prefer.

But if it stretches the image to fit the widescreen, which would distort the image then I'd be disappointed.

Thanks & feel free to share your experiences with widescreen gaming.

You can chose either method. Just go into the Destop Properties and set whether you want the image stretched or left in its standard resolution. Don't let the widescreen stop you. If anything, it's a fantastic thing to have. Now that I've got one, I don't ever want to go back to a "normal" screen.

A lot of games have tweaks to make them properly widescreen.

Even with the image stretched out I never notice. I've played through KOTOR at least twice, and Thief III, and I'm almost done with Doom 3 and the whole stretched thing has never been obvious while I'm playing. You just get so immersed in the game you won't notice.

the stretching is hard to notice as is the black bars once you're in the game. I agree with FT, I never wanna go back to normal screens.

widescreen blows away 4x3 aspect gaming.. you're more "covered" in the image.. its awesome.. add to that the amazing clarity of the 4750 monitor.. ugh..

Thanks for all the replies... it helps me feel good about buying this laptop.

But can anyone post (or link me to) pictures / screenshots of the games stretched and the games with black bars?

look at mayaman's review of the 4750 in the Sager Reviews forum, he has lots of screenshots of doom 3 in widescreen.

I do believe Adam (of PCT) has a few screens in action in the Official Reviews thread of the 8790. If not, hey- I'm senile (but darn it, pretty sure they're there!)

Here's a pic I took of Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic running on my 1440x900 WXGA screen. The picture looks washed out, but that's because my camera didn't like the low-light situation and the lens was open too long trying to compensate. Trust me, to see it in person is beautiful. Games that run widescreen natively are simply fantastic.

WoW

I play WoW on mine and it is great. Sorry I am at work I dont have any pictures. I love it though!

Just buy it, if you dont like it most places offer a 30 day money back guarentee. You'll eat 20-30 bux in shipping cost if you decide to send it back.

WoW character: DaKine lvl 38 Priest, hollar if you see me on if you are close in level we'll knock out some quests

Hopefully WoW open beta comes soon so the rest of you guys can try it out. It's amazing and the 8790 runs it like a champ!
