Ethernet

I got the 8790 for college, however, my laptop doesn't detect the ethernet cable. I tried everything: different cables, using my roommate's side of the room but it's still the same; my laptop doesn't work with the school data ports. I think it might have to do with my ethernet adapter being gigabit but I decreased the link speed to 100 and I still don't get a connection. I really don't know what to do, it's Saturday and school tech support is off. I've started college already and don't have an internet connection. Does anyone have any suggestions?

make sure you get the latest updated drivers (though that might be a problem considering you have no internet...)
and the fact that your school does not have gigabit access does not mean you cannot get internet. your ethernet connection is always backwards compatiable and will adjust to the 100 megabits if needed.

i dunno, but you might want to try a router. split the ethernet port in your room to see if its just your laptop or the school.

oh, have you had a sucessful connection with your laptop via ethernet elsewhere before?

My ethernet worked everywhere I've used it so far, except my dorm. I'm considering getting an ethernet card to put in the PCMIA slot. Gah. Thanks for your help, so far.

We have VLANs on the campus where I assisted managing the network. People's computers will not work in a different VLAN. Also, does your roommate get a connection on both ports? If so, it's not a bad port. Finally, make certain you are not using a crossover cable (one poor girl was, she could not connect, and I ended up with a free crossover cable). Failing everything else, can your neighbors connect to your room's ports, and you on theirs?

You should be able to connect.

I'm having the same problems with my 8790. It worked fine at home on my router/lan setup, as well as my office lan. Then, all of a sudden, it didn't work anymore (couldn't find DHCP. It will connect when hooked up directly to a DSL or Cable Modem. I've eliminated all external factors (bad cable, bad ethernet jack etc)... so, I'm at a loss.

I've installed the latest drivers, but no luck. This stumped the Sager support dude too and they issued me an RMA for it, but damn.. I use this thing for all my work, being with it out for 3 or so days sucks. Wi-fi works fine (but I can't set one up at my office due to security protocols).

Any suggestions on what to try before shipping this badboy?

Just Ship it. The same thing happened to me. Stoped working one day, nothing would fix it. sent it back, worked like a champ ever since.

Me, too. Had to RMA it back to Sager (it's on its return trip to me as of today). It worked a while, then just quit holding a connection. Surely this is a known thing with the 8790s by now?

man.... I love my 8790, but the stuttering issue (discussed in a different thread) and mainly this issue just slays me.

I know they offer a good notebook for the price but... quality control?????

I believe Sager has good quality control even with this issue.

My 8790, as well as others', worked great for a while, then inexplicably started the connection stuttering. In other words, you might say I "tested" mine for six weeks and it worked flawlessly. Then...poof. Maybe it's a bad run on a piece of the electronics in the NIC? Who knows but since they've repaired a bunch of these I wish they'd come out with an explanation.

yeah, you're right.. I do love my 8790, but damn... this kills my gaming and work stuff having to ship it back. just wish they worked, and continued to work without any problems 6~12 weeks after purchased ...I think I got mine in April/May of this year.
