replacing NIC

my college does NOT recommend Realtek NICs. So, is it easy to replace the Realtek Ethernet Card? How? Oh.. and does anybody have any clue what type of Ethernet and Wireless cards will be used in the coming "8888" and "5680" models?

The NIC is built into the motherboard's chipset. Adam may correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it is repairable. Why do thye object to the Realtek chipset? It's a very common chipset.

If you must use another card you could use the internal wireless from Sager or a 3rd party PCMCIA NIC.

I have been using my 5660 with the Realtek chipset without issue. I connect to my home LAN and work and have never had a single problem with data transfers.

Many, if not all, of the software applications that I support DO NOT recommend Realtek NICs. I support database applications that assist in business management and Realtek NICs have been known to cause database corruption. I suspect that others will come across this same problem.

If you are not going to use some serious app that utilizes school data, I would not worry about it. The IT department has to support a lot of computers and they try to limit the products that you use therby decreasing the amount of products they have to support. Try it before you buy another.

Looks like it will be intel ethernet in next models. Im guessing you could get a pcmcia ethernet card but it might be hard to find 1 that is not realtek based.. I don't think you will have too many problems with the realtek though..

dammit

i guess I'm gonna just have to wait for the "5680" or "8888" provided they do not use Realtek Ethernet or Wireless. The last thing I want is to have such a beast of a latptop that can't even connect to a network...

i really don't see how the realteks won't connect to the network.. just because they don't offically support them doesn't mean they won't work.. I'm sure many people are using realteks to connect as they are the major ethernet card chip....

would be dandy to swap out the NIC with gigabit

That's odd... the realtek 8139 chipset must be the most common ethernet chipset in the world. It helped bring networking to the masses with $10 nics! Oh well, they do have a lot of support and drivers.

I heard the next Sager models will include a gigabit ethernet card. Check the Eurocom post for details.
