Help w/ Screen Resolution

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 8100 that I'm replacing with a Gateway M675. The screen size on the Dell is a standard 14" and the Gateway is a 15.4 wide screen. Here's the deal, on the Dell I can get me resolution to 1400 x 1050, 32 bit. It uses GeForce2 Go w/ 16 Mb memory. I can only get a max of 1280 x 800, 32 bit on the Gateway. It uses Mobility Radeon 9600 w/ 64 Mb memory.

Is there anyway I can get higher resolution on the Gateway. I've tried messing with fonts and so forth under the properties tab but it doesn't make the change I need. Everything is so big compared to the Dell. I'm an analyist and am in Excel and Access constantly.............any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

No. The Dell had an SXGA+ screen, the Gateway has a WXGA screen. Different native resolutions, and therefore max resolutions, has nothing to do with the vid card. The external video output will be dependent on the video card, but the LCD screen itself determines what resolutions can be used. If you want more screen real estate, look for SXGA+ or UXGA.

Yea, Thanks for the reply. I digging in a bit further, I found the Gateway can only support up to 1280 x 800. I did find out how to go in and manipulate the settings to allow for a higher resolution but the monitor won't support it. I'd have to toggle my screen up and down and side by side. Thsi really sucks but it's my fault for not researching a bit further prior to the purchase. I guess I could always upgrade????

No, upgrading would require a screen swap, which is 1) very difficult if you don't know what you're doing, and 2) will void the crap out of your warranty, your best bet will be to return the laptop if possible, otherwise you're pretty much out of luck, if you use it on a desk most often, look into getting a monitor for the desk to connect to, you should be able to get a higher resolution on that
