Get a copy of DVD X Copy Gold, but make shure that you are buying the OLDER version that has the dvd ripping utility. This is what I have used to make copies of DVD's for my 4yr old

DVD Shrink (free) also works well. I think that 321 Studios (Maker of DVD X Copy) went "under".

DVD formats explained

So, if you just want to backup your movies, buy some DVD-R or DVD+R since you won't want to record over them. Also, they're a lot cheaper than DVD-RW discs. Hope that helps.

alright thanks that does help.. whats better, DVD+R or -R?

They're about the same price and quality, but some DVD players will not play one or the other. Test out your DVD players with one of each and see which standard works/does not work. I believe that DVD-R is slightly more compatible, but newer DVD players usually can play both.

For compatability with older CE DVD players, use -R. It work more consistently with a wider range of players. As for data storage. +RW offers more features if you plan to add files all the time. That's what I've come to find.

I have problems playing DVD-Rs in my Samsung V-1000 dual deck (vhs/dvd).

So I bought a Philips DVD750VR Dual Deck with Progressive scan....
It works way better at playing dvd-r/rw +r/rw than some of those older dvd players....
If your going to make a bunch of rips (and your dvd players kinda old) I suggest you buy a dvd player with the option of playing +r/rw -r/rw.

I say this cause a friend of ours returned from IRAQ and brought with them a bunch of DVD movies. Practically all of those DVDs were DVD9 formats (dual layer) but they wouldn't play in the Samsung DVD player we had in our living room but they played just fine in my Philips, which led me to belive they were ripped or "reproduction". The Looked exactly like DVDs, the bottom side was reflective bronz or silver like a normal DVD not like an R or RW with a blue, green, writing surface...

When I was choosing between + and - drives (before dual format were available). I went to www.dvdrhelp.com and looked at their database (fairly extensive but don't know how often it's updated) and did a model # serch for all the DVD players owned by myself, in-laws, parents and close friends. I then chose the format that was listed compatable for all of them. DVD-R was the clear winner.
