Thanks for all the helpful info. guys. I wasn't expecting 100 replies! honestly, i think i will go with the 5690 eventhough i really wanted the 17 inch screen. but i have decided that due to my limited budget it would be better to just go ahead with the 5690 so i can afford the 3 year warranty, extended battery life, wide screen (i know the 4750 has it too). etc.. when im spending this kind of money i just feel more comfortable with it being "souped up" especially with a 3 year warranty.. thats nice.

the 5690 does not have widescreen.

Ummm...extended battery life? Wide screen? Not the 5690...You'd be better off with the 3790.. Which does have those two features..and the same GPU and its cheap :P

I see you don't like my "gaping mouth avatar". I'm keeping it for now. I don't think the dell 9100 looks bad at all. The only gripe I have seen with it is that it runs quite hot. If It were announced earlier I would probably own one of them rather than the 4750.

FWIW, I just sent a 9100 w/9800 back to dell. Heh, I burned that bitch up in one night. I had a 3.2 northwood from a desktop system ready to drop into it but I ran it the first night on the Prescott. To be fair I game pretty hard but I was smelling silicon melt. I didn't care ... I wasn't stopping ... I just thought either this computer holds up the first night or it can melt down for all I care.

By the next morning, my cd drive would randomly not eject and games were stuttering more and more... Since then I have ramped up a nice rig based on the lian li PC-V2000W case (still waiting for my ati x800xt) and will be going for a 3790 ...

I like actually being mobile and no heat. Sounds like it can game to some degree.

My personal recommendation? If must go for the 9100 ... a northwood swap out is a must. What good is a power laptop if it heats up and might crap out on you in the middle of a match?? "Sorry guys I gotta stop my laptop is overheating" is not a conversation I wanna have.

I think that is mainly the prescotts fault though. You need some sort of supercooling for them. I just found out that the 4750 runs half life 2 engine at 25 fps at the native resolution!

wow, that's purty damn good. I can't wait for HL2! w00tz0rz!!!

Well dang! MElting Silicon and you kept on going eh? lol You probably just had something else faulty besides that crappy chip..haven't heard anyone else with the same machine say it was exploding on them...Course now that your sending it back..Dell will fix it and stick it on their refurb site..hmmmm..

so what is the best 5690 set up for under 2300 that i could get for gaming? and is an extra battery pack not extended battery life?? i know.. stupid question but i guess it just doesnt make sense at the moment
post #111 of 132
The extra battery will give you extended time, but I think its still less than the amd 64's battery life. The p4 really drains the battery fast. I don't think it has any power saving abilities.

Here's a great argument for the 4750. It looks much better than the fugly 5690.

Asthetically, I'd take the 56XX model over the 17" Model Any Day.... Also, the 56XX Models will take a lot more of a beating than the larger 17" ones...

I always felt too paranoid to take my 8790 anywhere when I had it, seemed to fragile... Where as the 5680.. Built like a tank

The touchpad buttons turned me off. Also the space under the screen doesn't look that great. I have also heard that the hinges can cause stress cracks to happen.

Had 5660, 5670, 5680...... Not a single problem with either... even dropped my 5660 off a kitchen counter, and not a single crack....

the 17" screen is definatly the selling point of the big Sagers... but the build quality of the 56XX is top notch...

The build quality is what keeps me from buying a Dell....

it's still warming up, only at 43C right now, I'll report back in a min
post #120 of 132
ok, I'm playing N 1.3 (a really bitchin ninja game for free!) which is pretty cpu intensive. before AS5 it would get up to 60C even 65C, now it hovers around 55C. sw33t!!! I'll do some Halo or UT in a min and see how it does then
