Can't enable hibernate...?

Whenever I go into the power options and try to enable hibernate I get an error message saying: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." I'm not sure what file it could possibly be talking about or what process is using it, but I'd like to be able to use hibernate because standby consistently causes problems...

Hey, can you do me a favor and test your hard drive standby setting? Like say set it at 3 minutes? I can't get mine to go into hybernate or standby even if i set individual times.

sure... I'll set them both at 1 or 2 mintues and try that now.

I also found the solution to my first problem: hibernation can't be enabled if you're running some kind of virtual drive program such as Daemon tools or Alcohol... lol, just FYI in case anyone else runs into the same problem

I set them each to 1 minute then sat and watched and both are working well on my laptop...

Damn. I don't know what is wrong with mine. I wonder if its one of the processes in the background. I don't have any virtual drive software installed. Could it be taskmanager? I disabled in my msconfig. In fact there are only 5 things in my MSconfig menu and they are all disabled

Ive had the same exact problem and the same exact error message with Hibernation on my 8500. Try this it worked for me. Turn off you laptop and unplug it, restart on batteries then check if you can enable Hibernation, if not then use it for a while and then try again. If that doesnt work let it go into standby and then try it again. I dont know what causes it, I have searched Microsoft Knowledge based articles and dell forums but I stumbled on the fix by accident.

Yeah, I did a clean boot and it went into all modes no problem. It's definitely a process running in the background. I'm happy with that as long as I know it isn't a hardware issue.
