Please, only actual or past owners.... I didn't vote, if that's what you guys are wondering.

I would like to see some justifications for those score... a 1 ? was it the pc or the resellers that was really rated. I gave a 8, because the screen could be better and nothing is worth a 10 ( maybe a 5 lbs lappy with an amd 64 and a 9800 256mb... )

I gave 10 because I was well aware of what I was getting. I didn't buy the hypothetical laptop that you mention, bought a CL56 and it has met and exceeded my expectations (had it approaching 4 months now).

You are right that nothing is worth a 10, but in the sense that from a purily statistical standpoint, the "perfect" laptop doesn't exist. But for what I got for the price and based off of my experience (empirical date), the CL56 has been a consistent and flawless performer for me. It has never crashed, never felt "hot," never given me an error message, never missed a keystroke, never dropped an internet connection, never done anything to alarm me.

So yeah, for the 1600 or so I got it for, it's a 10.

I could make an edumacated guess as to who the person who voted 1 was.

i think it's great, not counting the fact that i got a DOA unit the first time around, the replacement that is working perfectly so far is great, it could use better speakers, and unlike everyone else, i don't have any problem with the screen, i haven't seen too many other laptops so i couldn't really compare it, but there's nothing about it that stands out as being bad without a comparison

I gave it a 9 b/c of the screen... altho if I just turn up the brightness in dark games its fine... And also the fact that my screen goes crazy like once a week and I have to press above the F1 key to get it to stop is just wierd... but yeah, great lappy, gonna look to upgrade it next summer, then right b4 I go to college get a good desktop to compliment this un... and it being 2 yrs old at that point it will be subjected to scratches/wear... lessening the chances of theivery... wow, did I just get off topic... ......... sorry... yeah, a nine is good....

I've had my CL56 for about 5 days now. I haven't really found any major flaws thus far. It's pretty much what I expected after 2months of research and reading reviews about the CL56. The only minor thing is that it takes some getting used to where some of the keys are located...like the del, ins, and the pgup pgdwn keys.

I've had my CL56 for 2 months now. The only downside for me is the poor LCD screen...and no PCI-Express, Centrino2.

Actually, I'm pretty happy with it but if a new Compal that came out that fixes these, I'll upgrade in an instant!

had thsi thing for awhile now. owned a few notebooks before this one and this one is my favorite of them all. Gave it a 9 due to minor annoyances/things it has/does not have. But again, nothing major of course.

For the money, it's tough to beat. My only concern is that it sometimes seems to get pretty hot after a few hours of battlefield Vietnam and the screen goes funny (artifacts maybe?). In any case, a good machine, plays doom 3 and compiles really fast.

awesome machine, decent battery life, and definately the best value.
I think that too, Zarkad. How can you give 10 to a computer if you know that it's not perfect? 10 is the perfection, so it would probably never be reached. If you give 10 to the CL56 and tomorrow Compal releases the CL56-B (??), with the same price, but with a screen with better viewing angles, what grade you should give it? eleven? Even if you consider the grade based on when the notebook was released (fair, since my Celeron 2.4Ghz is better than any PIII, but not when the PIII was released), I wouldn't give 10, since the screen is "less than perfect".

I rated mine an 8. I have been using it for a little over a month now. Took me sometime to get used to the keyboard (first notebook owned). The screen isn't that good compared to some store models, but its not as bad as some peeps had exaggerated before I bought mine. Overall performance is excellent, very stable and reliable and the wireless internet convience is a feature I can't live without now

I'm satisfied of my buy, but a 10 would have been, Laptop is so amazing it just blows away all I've ever seen before. Sorry CL56 you're the perfect laptop for me but you didn't exactly do that, and the screen ain't perfect, good enough ( better then my friend's Ibm 1 year old, awful and 14 inch ). So with a better screen it would be a nine definately. Satisfaction overall is a 10, i had no problem what so ever, but i did install newest drivers for the ati and the wireless card...
I give the CL56 an 8. The screen I can live with. I had a CL50 before this CL56, and they are similar, but functionality wise, the CL50 was better. What I mean by this is things like drivers and general "quirks." Things like the wifi not working unless ez-button is installed, the onboard sound on mine wasn't working (which made me get the echo indigo, not such a bad thing afterall!). Other things like the Intel Pro 2100 wireless that won't work with the CL56 drop it's rating a little bit.

However, performance wise, this thing smokes through benchmarks and games for a laptop. Not bad for a 6.5lb laptop that gets 4 hours of batteries.

9. I chose not to give the CL56 a 10 because of its chasis/case. It doesn't seem too rugged, and in fact I've already managed to chip the paint of the top edge simply from rubbing it against my wall behind it. The strip above the keyboard is very flexible and flimsy, and I am scared that it will snap/break when lifting it to access the laptop's internals.

Screen is not an issue at all to me. I chose the CL56 due to it's standard display ratio; I opted not to go with a widescreen - and understood the slight sacrifice in viewing angles in doing so.

very valid points and mini-reviews... Screw each of us posting huge reviews after we already know all about it, we should do these mini-review-polls...

P.S. Who is giving these things a 1? Why?
i wouldve given my cl56 a 10 given its great performance, battery life, and weight were it not for the lackluster speakes and mediocre screen. but its still a solid 9. ive experienced no hiccups thus far

id really like to see how ppl could rate this machine a 1
post #20 of 23
The good points are that it's quite, less hot, performs well, good battery life, and light weight. The bad points are rather lame speakers, not the greatest angle point of view on the LCD, and it's not easy to get the manufacturer to give us easy access to drivers. For example, Doom 3 needed new ati drivers to keep it from crashing. I went to ATI sight and they passed the buck and told me to go to laptop manufacturer. They had diddly. Fortunately someone told me about Omega drivers. At any rate, I'd give a 9. It's too bad they don't have the ability built in to upgrade your video card down the road, however. Everything else (Ram, Hard drive, DVD/CD) are upgradable though.
