AMD Athlon 64 Notebook Elimination

Thread Starter
Hello all, i'm new here and am buying a laptop in october... I know it is too soon to start debating over what to get now but i am very anxious..

I need a laptop that will stay with me for 3 or 4 years and thus i went towards the Athlon 64..

I will now make a small opinion of each laptop i considered... if there are any other laptops that carry the MOBILE (1MB L2 Cache, 62w power consumption, 1.4V) Athlon 64 please let me know.. Also if any of the laptops reviewed carry the normal 85w consuming athlon 64 then please tell me.. I don't mind the DTR versions as long as they have a battery life of more than 2 hours..

Oh, and dont mention emachines or ASUS as they have no dealers where im buying..

Thanks

out of those, i would recommend the Acer ferrari 3200, Uniwill N258KAO, Sager 4750/Clevo D470K, and the Arima W730, as those all have radeon 9700s which is the best u can get right now unless u wanna buy a dell and have been reviewed on these here forums quite favorably.

Soon To Be (i hopety-hopety-hope):
Dell Inspiron 9100: 3.2ghz Pentium 4HT (Northwood please), 1gb of DDR RAM , 60gb 7200rpm hard drive (anyone wanna trade for a 5400rpm 80gb?), 256mb ATi Mobility Radeon 9800, 15.4" WUXGA Screen, 8x DVD+RW with double-layer write capability (dual format firmware?), TrueMobile 1350 Internal Wireless, iXPS Plasma QuickSnap, 3"/4" Vanguard DesignerII case, 200GB ext. HD, and oodles of mods (probably XPS chassis swap, painting, LEDs, and badge swap)
Wow, that's quite a machine! You forgot internal bluetooth though

also, the VIA K8T800 chipset is much better than the nf3-150 because the latter had problems with operating the HT bus at full speed, while the VIA ran at full speed but didnt have a locked AGP clock which sux for OC'ing the vidcard and CPU at the same time, as whenever the FSB goes up so does the AGP clock. and the SiS chipset isn't as good as either of them, from what i've seen in reviews.

i don't need bluetooth, but i might get it if i have extra cash.... however, the future of my purchase looks dubious thanks to my parents, so i might have to settle for a Sager 3790. not like thats a bad thing.

This is the Compaq

Fourth and Final Contender:

Also my personal favourite...

The Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo a1630..

Also known to some people as UNIWILL N258KA0 and Mwave N258KA0.. this laptop is one beautifull peice of art.. Adequately priced for all the specs it has (which i will be getting to in a second).. It boasts the powerful AMD Athlon 64 3400+ with the SiS 755 chipset (faster than the VIA alternative). it's battery life is a decent 2+ hours.. both RAM slots are available for customization.. it has a 4x DVD+R that can write CDs at 16x, but what i love most about this piece of hardware is its ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of DDR VRAm.. Another plus is the 5.1-channel output which will enable me to turn it into a media paradise.. I know the resolution 1,200 x 800 bugs some of you but i don't mind..

Unfortunately, the downside is the very slow 4200RPM HDD and the 7.7lbs weight..

Benchmarks and Pics:

As you can see these are very impressive numbers for a laptop.. Thanks to the Mobility 9700..

As for pics of this beauty..

Beautiful aint it??

Now please tell me which one of the four wins??

Thanks

the Sager 4750 pwns all other AMD lappies right now, hands down. It gets the highest benchies, around 3500 in 3dmark03 at stock clocks but it has been pushed over 4000 and is still stable. It gets 2 hours on battery which ain't bad, and everything else is uber-bitchin.

take in mind that i have a max of 1700$ to spend

I've made the righ choice in choosing the AMD 64 platform right?
well, for $1700 the 4750 is outta the question, but yeah AMD 64 is the way to go if you want maximum longevity and gaming power in a lappy.
Thread Starter
ok. so which one of the four lappies should i get? also, what case to go with it (widescreen compatible and ability to hold a few books)..
I would go with the Ferrari or the Compaq, but its probably just me.
the Uniwill if you don't mind the lo-res screen and the heat is the best choice. Though I wouldn't buy the Fuji... get a no-name at lower cost:

ibuypower
cyberpowersystems
etc...
Looking from your post, you like the Uniwill 258KAO, there has been an explosion of people ordering that system, you said you hated the 4200 hd, no problem, look at my sig, thats right, a 7200rpm 60gb hd, do you likey now? And from my research, Ibuypower and cyberpower and mwave have the best prices for this system which is the best bang for the buck system in this class. However, if you do order from IBP or CP you will have to sacrifice tech support.

Compaq is an ok system and very cheap, but the GPU just suxors.

the Acer, good, but the 4200rpm hd can go to hell.

if the fujitsu has a mobile 62w CPU, ill probably get it..

Neone able to confirm that??

No way, you have it all wrong. The Acer Ferrari 3200 is a great buy and the low-power Mobile Athlon 64 2800+ is not outdated by any means since it only has a max 35W power usage. With this you get about 3 hours battery life and that's the best you can get on any AMD64 notebook today. VIA K8T800 is also the fastest chipset you can get on any notebook today, including NVIDIA nForce3 Go150 (with max 600MHz HyperTransport bus).

The Acer Ferrari 3200 is great no matter what, the low-power Mobile Athlon 64 2800+ is actually on par with the much more expensive Dothan 2.0GHz. When looking at the rest of the features, its second to none compared to any AMD64 notebook. It comes standard with a Toshiba 80GB 4200RPM disk like most Acer notebooks, including the Travelmate 8000 series.
