OK, let's start over: What should I buy!??

You guys must hate this. Just last week I was ready to pull the trigger on the W1N and was looking for reasons not to get it. Well, you've sown the seeds of doubt. I'm starting to think, maybe I could get more for my money. I'll be brief about what I'm looking for...

1. Portability -- <7lbs loaded
2. Looks -- metal chasis or maybe just silver in color.
3. Function -- Last me 3 years. Like to have power on demand but I don't really game
4. Widescreen 15.4"
5. Thin --Less than 1.3"
6. Price between 1800-2500
7. Battery Life >3hours

The new lineup:

1. Asus W1N: Looks at a premium

2. Asus M6Bne: Available from proportable, powernotebooks or now DL.

3. ABS Mayhem G2/Mitac 8050: This computer is really really growing on me. Haven't seen really any bad reviews. Not as established as the Asus, but silver! About 2300 loaded

4. Acer 4501 Travelmate: Thin, silver, cool design, cheaper so could upgrade to a 7K60 and 1GB stick for about 2200 total.

I'm really concerned about 2, 3 and 4 and especially the Mitac--what do you guys/girls/other think about the Mitac as my choice?

Thanks for your patience

I also have some questions about the Mitac as barebones but I'll start a new thread for that...

I might prefer the Aspire 1681 over the 4501 because it they have similar specs yet the 1681 costs a lot less, and its still silver

I'm not too confident about the mitac 8050 but it does have the most video RAM out of the choices, my only gripe is that my preferred resellers don't have them in stock. If you're confident in the reseller then I say check out the reviews so far and go for it.

Oh yeah, what about the Sager 3790?

I'm just iffy about the sager and it's battery life. It's not very ergonomic and sleek looking imo.

The 4501 had a cardreader and was thinner with a longer battery--that's why i was looking at it over the other...

Why aren't you confident in the mitac. I couldn't find a bad thing about it after a few hours of searching....just that it's a new odm. That's why i was thinking about buying from ABS

I'm not too confident because I haven't heard much about it or seen it firsthand, when it comes to expensive pieces of technology I tend to be very cautious, I learned my lesson when I bought a Dell 8250 and now I find myself needing RAM that cost more than a new motherboard and case put together.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I like the looks of the Mitac better than the M6bne, but the Asus might have a more established rep.

As for the Acer--somewhat of a compromise on some features, but a more established company. Although I've read Acer support can be iffy. What I would love is for the 2025 Aspire or the W1N would drop about 200 dollars in price each...

I like the Asus W1N. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this unit. BTW...looks supiciously similar to the Toshiba Qosimo...

Just checking out the Mitac too...looks sleek but they are a bit on the expensive side...

Gets 3 hours of battery, but just barely. Probably just a tad heavy/thick for you though. Still a good deal, and at the 3nd of those three years, you get a new laptop for free!

ge the ASUS for the modular bay battery. 6+ hours

if you buy it barebone and build it yourself, you can get a that hitachi hdd and 1gb ram plus extended warranty (for the barebone chassis) from reseller for less than $1900

The Mitac can be had for a good price from rjtech.com. Check it out. The Mitac is currently the laptop of my dreams.

I say if you're not into gaming stick with the W1.

LOL! Ten posts and the comments have gone full circle! Should I try a poll!!??

I like the mitac from RJtech, but what about a logo? I need a logo for it!!

Best place for the M6BNe barebones??

The W1n is unique in that it gives you the WSXGA+. If that's a factor for you then your choice is easy. If not there's no reason to go for that over the M6BNe.
Don't know enough about the Mitac to say either way, but since I'm not considering it myself I must have passed on it due to something that was lacking at some stage or another...

Yeah, lol, I ruled out all of them at one point or another. I think I ruled out the mitac originally b/c it was plastic and the bat life was poor. But recently I've been reading that the battery life should be easily 3+ which suits me and that the plastic is sturdy.

I've never seen a WXGA or WSXGA so i have no idea what I like or don't like. I like my 14" SXGA dell screen. I just made the fonts like 125% and I was good to go...

If you like 14" w/ SXGA you'll hate WXGA on a 15.4". I think it was probab;y the WXGA that turned me off the Mitac actually. Find a 15" LCD monitor somewhere & set it to 1024x768, then pretend it's wider & you've got your wxga. The vertical space is pretty much the same, and if you ask me it's just blerrrggghhh.

I own a G2 and its a fantastic laptop, for most normal apps I can get around 3-3.5 hours on the batt, but that with speedswitch xp. As far as the screen, its great, its so clear and it looks great, granted I can use a little more space sometimes but it runs circles around my friends Acer (i forget the model #) which has the 15 in sxga+ screen. If you have any questions regarding the 8050 ill be happy to answer them.

...Back to the W1N we go....

I swear when is that price going to drop! Knock 1-200 off of it and I'd jump all over it. I liked my 14" SXGA, but I don't know if i would necessarily dislike the WXGA. Hmmm, maybe I should just get the W1N and deal with it. I'm still tempted to buy from startech and get the 1.7 Dothan and 7K60 HDD. The thing I don't like is that they say it doesn't void the warranty and EVERYONE tells me that's a lie....That bugs me on principle. Let's say the LCD just dies on me...then what?
Lol, why did you decide not to get it? Was it the pricing compared to the Asus m6bne?

It already seems like you're set on that notebook anyway.

I was "set" on the...lets see:

Fujitsu 6020
T42p
Mitac 8050
Sager 3790
W1N

I like the looks of the W1N, although i'm unsure about the price, lack of dothan.

I found your other topic, though for future reference I hope other people remind people in new topics they make exactly what type of laptops they're looking for

From what I can tell so far is that you want something portable but you want the option to game somewhat yet you want a ton of other features to go along with it. And with all that you want something aesthetically appealing.

I would have picked the IBM from your initial post but seems you don't find it aesthetically pleasing. But you should be happy to know that the Asus w1n is available at proportable (a reputable retailer) for $2399.

This is the one you want: its good to look at, its within your budget, good battery life and it can do what you want and it has a solid build backed by a reliable company. Take it.
