Inspiron 700m (Very) Quick Review & Pics

Ok guys... Ive been super swamped since coming back into town and work is backed up so I can only give a quick breif review for the moment ont he 700M.

Screen: 12.1 WXGA Super Glossy Display is AWESOME! I have a Sony A190 and its not quite as bright but very clear. I love it. Not all people like glossy so this may be a turn off for them. I think its Dell's best display thus far however.

Speed: I can't give any hard numbers on speed because I dont have time but this thing fires up REAL fast. And I only have 256MB in it so far. I would say it booted into Windows and Loaded all of Dells crappy software and untilities in about 30 seconds. Once I throw more memory in, and then reformat with XP Pro, this thing will fly just fine what for it will be used for.

Keyboard & Touchpad: Solid feel, barely any "flex" in keyboard as far as I can tell. Touchpad is pretty standard and seems to work fine.

Size/Weight: Considering the 12.1" Screen and everything that is inside, including the Centrino 1.6 and the DVD+-RW Dual Layer drive, the unit is very compact and easy to carry. Its not along the lines of say the Sony or Fujitsu ULTRA-Portables, but to be honest, the extra .5 pounds and .5 inch here and there, and larger screen, and faster processor FAR outweigh (No pun intended) the benefits of owning a laptop for the sake of it being small.

Considering I got an Outrageous deal on this ($1300) witht he accidental insurance, Im more than happy!

Ive attached pics below, so enjoy. I will try and give some more detailed specs as soon as I can this week once I get more memory and XP Pro on.

Thanks again for everyones help!

Nice review and pics, I have some customers interested in purchasing the 700M I will have to pass this on to them.

Damnnnnnnnnn!!!! I LOVE that glossy screen.

I would sell my soul (and my D600) on E-bay in a jiffy if only that laptop had an actual video card in it......the second that happens I'll drop out of college and buy one.

I think I'm the only person on this entire forum that just can't stand those glossy screens. Other than that, it looks like a slick little notebook. I like the color scheme better than the current Inspiron line.

Oh...and I like how all the status lights (caps/num/scroll lock, HD indicator and so forth) all are located on the screen bezel. Nifty.

that's a nice god damn notebook. how's it running heat and battery life wise?
That is a nice notebook indeed. If they offered it in the traditional matte LCD I would snag one today

A co-worker has just bought a Sony S150 with a similar glossy screen and it is stunning, far better than the dim and fuzzy Dell anti-glare screens. If the 700m looks close to as good as the Sony, I'll be happy.

Sweet. thanks. I just called to change my order to a dvd burner and a 60gb HD. I couldn't resist. too bad those little icons don't light up blue, I don't really like green. How about the power button?? green as well? oh well, I guess i'll live with that.

Has anyone found a good bag for this little notebook?? HOw about the best deal for a brand name RAM upgrade besides crucial??

those lights look like they'd be easily mod-ible, cheapa...

Looks lovely....but does the power adaptor really go into the side???? The back is so much more practical surely? Plus, the network cable and AC cable get in the way of the mouse?

Sorry, don't mean to sound like a party-pooper but my inspiron 8000 had this 'design error' and it drove me mad. Cables got in the way of the mousing, and got yanked sideways if caught, rather than yanked out, which is more safe at the back.

Who uses a mouse and a network cable with a wireless laptop?
yeah, i also noticed the usb ports on the left. if i install a wireless mouse, do i have to use it on the left only??? I notice the power on the side too and I didn't like that. what is the back for then??
but no laptop is perfect.

Flockey, do you know how to mod those lights??? or is there a link?? does anyone plan to do that?
did you get the 2nd battery, how does it feel weight overall, etc..etc..!
so future laptop revisions will follow this new colour scheme?

Update

Hey everyone... Ill try and answer some more questions...

Battery Life: I havent done any exact tests, however, with Heavy useage I've gotten about 3 Hours of Battery life. WHich is fine for my use. It is the standard battery too.

Speed Update: I threw in an extra 512MB Kingston Memory that I got on Sale for $95 at best Buy and threw on Windows XP Pro and this sucker is even faster. Shaved another 5-10 seconds off boot up time. I'm impressed witht he speed for it's size.

Ports: Im not really plugging anything external into this device so the port placement wasnt an issue with me. The AC adapter on the side is a bit odd, but fine.

Weight & Build QUality: The weight of the unit feels very light to me. On par with the Ultra portables. However the build quality is not cheap. The whole unit feels very solid.

Overall: Im quite happy with my purchase!

Thanks again!

do you guys think that 512mb on top of the 256 is enough to copy dvds and edit photos??? or should i get a 1 gb??? does it affect the speed if i use a 256 stick and then a 1gb??
thanks.
oh was it easy to change the memory?? does it change the warranty on the machine
